It's shown that if you were to switch a job every other year, basically use your position to get something even better, you're going to make on average 50% more than the person who just stays at the same company and gets pay raises. The reason for that is that when you're in the same company, they typically raise you anywhere between 3 to 5% of what you were making the prior year. But if you leverage that and you negotiate really well and you move to a brand new company, they could start you off at 20% higher than the previous company and then all of a sudden now you got a 20% pay boost. Any increases on that? even if you get 5% of a 20% increase, that's still a lot more than what you would have gotten at the previous company and then 2 years later, you just do it again.

Now you don't want to do it too quick because then companies will see that. Oh, you're only working with these places like 3 months and then quitting and that's pretty bad. but 2 to 3 years is about The Sweet Spot.

And your résumé is full of credentials that are only a year or too long, shows that you can’t stay at a job very long. Good luck.

I’ll never understand how some people can work at the same place for like 45 years

Extremely true in the tech space

This only works if you have a generic skills that work in many companies.. like accountant or IT specialist or whatever. I have a job in airline engineering which is quite specific for that company. I have tried to get into other jobs, but in the end I realized the job I have suites me the best, and I love the company and pay is very good… I end up doing it already for 32 years!

Money is not the most important thing in the world, doing something that makes sense, the coworkers you work with, the company itself, its all way more important once you get paid enough to live a normal life without financial stress.

    Facts

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @EverythingCOD16 says:

Nowadays businesses look at the fact that you have switched jobs every year and won’t hire you

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @dogpark77 says:

3-5%?? I only get like 2-3% in healthcare

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @JustinLietz says:

This doesn’t work for entry level jobs, at the point it looks like you’re a job hopping bum who can’t maintain stability or loyalty

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @1983McGovern says:

But what your showing is loyalty in a brand no longer matters. And then competeing companies can no longer compete thus making your switching no longer profitable so when you exit someone else will quickly fill leaving you no return option nor competing edge.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @MistaOneGuy says:

If I look at a resume, and the dude has a different job every other year, I'd definitely think twice… If it's all within the same company, that's a different story, but how many companies have enough promotion levels to cover every year?

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @radomone says:

my current employer gives a raise of $2/hr after the probationary period and every year but tries to convince you to go on a salary that pays as much as a deck worker makes

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @trekrl2327 says:

It depends pretty heavily on your career. This is especially true in tech but far harder in some other industries with relatively standardized pay scales that are based on experience.

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @derekvalentim6068 says:

First year is really dialing in the fundamentals of the job, second year is coasting while performing at a high level, third year is upskilling and networking. Then you move companies. Rinse and repeat. It makes for a good balance as you’re starting a family, buying a house, and just growing as a person.

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @user-ix1hb8yn4c says:

Im not saying switching jobs is always smart, but I've known far more people that have stuck around a place, worked their butts off, and not made it anywhere..

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @epp4791 says:

Yeah when I see that I don't higher you. Because it shows you have no interest in long term learning the business and won't actually bring value. So I won't higher anyone me that I see their resume doing that. You aren't valuable if you do that. Because you don't know enough about anything to actually have value

  31. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @lily-suryaseverine4033 says:

Hmmm… That's hella incorrect in many unionised countries. Wages are fixed.

  32. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @longhairasian2902 says:

This advice only is applicable if the new company is willing to pay you more and that’s if they have the budget. Often time they’ll use the market rate for the position, you’ll have to negotiate and talk them into giving you that 20% and that’s if they’re able to do 20% more.

  33. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @user-tl5yb1jy7c says:

Engineers are all paid similarly. Find a decent one and focus energy on life outside work money will not bring happiness.

  34. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @avarmauk says:

But do it too often and employers don’t want to hire you anymore, since you’re likely to leave 😂

  35. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @akinmovie6807 says:

My company has trapped me I’ve gotten 20% raises the last two years

  36. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars @Fleshwarper says:

Why don't people want to work?

Because looking for a better job is my full time job.
