36 years married here! Lots of growth in each of us over the years. Learning to be open with each other about anything we're feeling is paramount. This means we trust each other to not personalize the info and instead we (try to) non-defensively listen. We've discovered some other things along the way that have been really helpful. Studying "Attachment Theory" was/is very enlightening. (Read Sue Johnson's book "Love Sense" to learn more about how it applies in romantic relationships or read John Gottman's material.) Love Stan Tatkin, the famous psychologist and thinker who writes about creating "Secure Functioning" relationships. (Search for him on Youtube, etc.) Finally, developing the ability to have self-intimacy and self knowledge through a mindfulness practice has enabled us to not project our sh*t onto each other. We are the happiest we have ever been! It's amazing when you know yourself well enough to short circuit your ego before it gets a chance to muck things up.
