Twitter has a cashtag feature that is enabled when you put the dollar sign ($) in front of a stock ticker. This allows you to research what people are saying about the stock on Twitter. StocksToTrade has a built-in Twitter screener to help you find that breaking news even faster.
The second great way Twitter can be used as a trading tool is for its “idea generation.” This is a great way to get an idea of what the stock market “hive mind” is thinking. You’ll see which stocks are the most talked about, and which ones are on other traders’ radars. Be very careful about blindly following those trades. Remember, Twitter is an open network and everybody has an agenda. It's a great way to do research, but you also need to remember traders are possibly posting to that network because they've already got a position they're looking to either get in or out of. Be very, very skeptical and never just blindly follow ideas. Build your own process, build it in, but then make your own trades. Don't follow picks.
If you follow Tim Bohen on Twitter ( @Tbohen), you’ll see that he loves to look for heavily shorted, low float stocks. He’s looking for those low float stocks, big on the day, then he reads that sentiment to see when there's loaded with shorts, and those become some of the most explosive buys in day trading.
