The EU and United States have recently banned Russian oil on top of a raft of other sanctions since Russia invaded Ukraine in February.
And the ban of Russian oil is a politically popular move because it is seen as the West blockading Russia's economy in response to the aggression.
The problem is that this move is destroying the European and US economies instead while Russia is raking in growing revenues.
European and global dependence on Russian oil and gas mean that sanctions are somewhat futile while there are enough other buyers happy to buy Russian oil instead.
And while oil and gas prices are sky high, Russia stands to benefit financially.
