Citadel and Credit Suisse have just had their ratings downgraded to the same rating! Both are now rated Baa3/BBB-, one step away from a junk rating! This means that right now, Citadel are about as stable as Credit Suisse!
This is massive for both Citadel and Credit Suisse, for Citadel? Shorts are in trouble, for Credit Suisse? they'll now have to stump up additional collateral/security for their loans, additional collateral for their positions and many other banks with exposure to credit suisse will also likely be impacted too
This comes at a time when the market is continuing to tank and the UK has just admitted that they/we are in a recession! likely to last at least 2 years.

Your critical flaw in your commentary is you're assuming they bought their positions at the high. they arent "down" 50%, they have lost 50% of their profits. They didnt buy 100% of their position at the all time high
