End Song: Kimi no Na Wa Remix

Hi everyone welcome back to the channel. It is your boy Brian and in today's video, we're gon na go over exactly what the best starter credit cards are now, with 2019 coming to a close and 2020 right around the corner. I believe this is a very good video to put out on the channel just as a refresher for anyone in the credit card game or for anyone who wants to send this type of video and you want to get them in the credit card game as well. Too, now before I share with you guys exactly what I consider the best starter cards for you guys to start with, I'm gon na go over exactly what those categories are, because I believe it's important to determine exactly why a card is gon na be considered a Best starter car: the reason why I'm putting these fake little Bunney peace sign thingies is because this credit card doesn't really exist and the reason why it doesn't exist is because everyone has their own unique spending habits, say Brian Zhong right here all he spends his money On is Chipotle, then a card like the American Express gold card is gon na make sense.

For me, but say: Billy Jung over here only spends his money on office utility supplies. I want to get any value from the gold card because it gives me 4x on restaurants and groceries and obviously office supplies doesn't fall in that category. A good card for Billy John would probably be like the chase in cash card, where it gives him 5 %. So the whole point I'm trying to make is that it depends on each person on what that relative best card is now.

Here are five things that I look out for when I consider a card one of the best starter cards for number one. It needs to provide me easy to use category rewards. What this means is a card needs to be relevant to the spending habits that a person will generally do for a general, all-purpose, beginner starter card. I really look out for dining and travel now.

Number two factor that I look out for for a good beginner starter card is that it needs to have no annual fee. So say you have no annual fee card. If you pay off your card every month in full you're, never gon na have to pay a dime of interest to any of these banks or credit card issuers. As a beginner credit card, I often advise against a high annual fee because annual fees can go up from a hundred dollars a year to even five hundred and ninety five dollars a year.

An example of that card is the American Express business platinum in the beginning of your credit card journey. The most fundamental principle is to learn and understand the basics of your credit card and then get into the higher tier cards. A no annual fee cart is not gon na cost. You a single dime as long as you guys pay off that card in full every single month, and this is really the best time for you guys to understand how credit card works.

If you pay off the minimum statement, balance how that's going to affect you typically compared to paying off your full statement balance I do understand there is a learning curve to getting into the credit card game and that's why I believe it's not good to just jump. The ranks now number two kind of leads into number three, and that's because I often look for beginner starter cards to have a promotional Apr period or a card. That's gon na offer. You no interest now we're going off of the principle that you are paying off.
Your card in full every month, but, like I mentioned in number two, this is really the time where you can understand credit, and you can really make those mistakes that you wouldn't be able to make later on down in the road. Now, in the beginning, I've actually made a ton of mistakes. On my credit, I didn't know how much you had to pay off. I didn't understand statement balance.

I didn't understand minimum payment balance and I almost ended up paying interest more than a couple times on my cards, just because I did make that mistake now this goes without saying, but guys please pay off your credit cards in full. Do not make it a habit to put your credit card debt on those no APR cards, saying that you're gon na pay it off within the next year. Once that's up, it's just not a good habit to start and that's not something I recommend start in the beginning as good as you can, by understanding the best fundamentals for this game now. The fourth thing that I look out for to determine whether a credit card is the best or not is if they have good, reliable customer support.

Let's not forget customers make up a majority of the business, and businesses can die out from showing negligence in the customer. Support area when we're talking about something like credit cards, personal finances, where people have access to our banks - and this is about our money, then I believe we should ask some the best customer support and I really don't want to be in a situation where I'm disputing Something or fighting against someone. I really believe that credit cards that offer customer support that really rely on you and that actually help you and stick up for you. Those are the things that I really look out for that make up really good credit cards now.

The fifth thing that I look out for is that these credit cards need to be easily accepted when people are often looking for the best beginner starter cards. Usually they either don't have a credit score or they have a low credit score or their credit score is decent, but they have a very low history. I want to be able to apply for a card that I know I can get approved for if some of these credit card issuers aren't gon na be lenient on some of the people that apply for these cards and they're just gon na deny everyone. I don't consider that a good starter card just because it's not really a starter card now here's an awesome good little tip, though, for anyone who does have a low score, if you do not have a score at all, if you guys are still living with your Parents, or you know someone in your household or your fan, where they have a really good credit score.
What you guys can do is get yourself added as an authorized user. Basically, their credit score or their power is gon na, come down and send it over to you - and you just accept that so say. For example, my grandpa had an 850 credit score and his credit history was like 30 years old. I would just say respectfully: grandpa young, would you be able to add me as an authorized user on your account once he does do that once he adds my social security number to that account.

I will actually see an increase in my score significantly, but that's a very easy way to actually improve your score without doing anything at all. Unfortunately, for me my grandpa passed away rest in peace, grandpa, Jung, rest in peace, fun fact all my grandparents are like in Korea, so they don't even have like a American credit score, so I would probably be the one giving them and authorized user' if they ever Wanted to come back to the US, okay, so what you guys have been waiting for. So what are these best cards bride? Let's get into the jam drumroll the best starter credit card is going to be the discover it card. You guys can actually get the discover its student card or the regular discovery card.

Both are pretty good, but if you guys get the student version, they actually give you a little bit of cash if you guys get good grades. The reason why I say good grades is because I never had good grades and I still had gotten that $ 20 bonus little tip right there. Now. The reason why I say the Discover student aid card is one of the best cards out.

There is because they have really really good customer support. Their customer support is actually based in the United States. It's all domestic and if you guys work with credit card issuers, you will find that most of the time they will outsource their customer support to different countries. This isn't abnormal and a lot of companies end up doing this Apple.

Does this Microsoft? Does this the biggest businesses out there Amazon? Does this generally companies do this because they save a ton of money when they do this, but the downside of this is: is that the US customers that experience this often don't get the best experience because you're working with someone international? Now I'm not saying this is a case all the time. I've had some really good virtual assistants that have worked for me that do live in other countries like the Philippines and they do a splendid job, and I think it's good for the worldwide economy. For this to happen, but there are other instances where you get forwarded to another country like in India and you're working with a very beginner or a very new, where you can barely understand them, then it can cause quite a issue just because they don't really understand The full spectrum of the problem - or they may not understand the full literature or the Shlaim that we have when we're talking to them. So getting back to the point discover has customer support that is based out of the u.s.
that does work for the people, and I have seen reviews of people who have worked for discovers customer support and they say the job experience is really good as well, and That's something that's really good to hear just because if the workers are having a good time generally they're in a good mood, then we're in a good mood. Then the whole world is happy in addition to that, their cashback categories are very easy to use. They tell you what your credit score is and on top of that they have a program called cashback match. So cashback match is pretty insane.

If you guys are getting 5 % say for restaurants. For the month of January, you're actually gon na be able to match all the cashback you get within that first year. So if I'm getting 5 % back on restaurants, technically, it's considered 10 percent cashback. Now, with every great credit card, there are some downfalls.

So here a couple downfalls that you guys need to keep in consideration when applying for this card Discover is not widely accepted. I've had issues where merchants did not actually want to accept my Discover card just because they thought the interchange fees were a little too high for them. Usually, this is gon na be like those hole-in-the-wall restaurants or Asian restaurants, where they're trying to save a bit more on costs and I've had my Discover Card. Kindly declined a couple times at these places, so they're not accepted everywhere as much as visas.

But this is why you guys have multiple cards for these type of situations. You don't need to get just one good starter card. You could actually have multiples. So when I first started out, I actually had the Discover student eight card and I paired that with my uber visa Barclays card they actually nerf that card, so you guys won't find the same benefit.

I don't recommend that anymore, but back in the day, that was a card that I really recommended a lot now. Another thing that falls in the disadvantaged section, which may not be a disadvantage to all people, but it could be to some people is that Discover just offers you cashback when you go with cards like chaser American, Express or getting points where you can either get cash Back or you can redeem it for travel for a higher amount when you're doing cashback you're just stuck with cashback. You can't do anything with it. You can usually just get gift cards or apply it to your saving thoughts, but other than that.

You really can't get more value on top of what you're getting from your cards. I feel like. That is a disadvantage, because you just have to do a little bit more work and you can find yourself redeeming that amount a lot more now getting into the second best credit card. I believe it's a Chase Freedom Card.
I've made a ton of videos, it's either gon na, be the chase freedom or the chase freedom unlimited and generally. This is gon na, be a beginner start, a card with chase that people can get into to start their relationship and get into the ecosystem within Chase. The Chase Freedom is a Visa card, so it's usually accepted pretty much everywhere. Wherever you go, it has rotating quarterly categories that we made a video on, and we talked about the full benefits on why I believe the chase freedom is one of the most valuable cards out there.

In addition to that, they do offer you something called Chase offers, and you often won't find this with a lot of beginner starter cards. But chase' offers is basically something that you can add to your card where it gives you additional discounts or more cashback. Now I'll get random chase offers for like Starbucks for Sephora. I don't even use Sephora, but just like random stores that just basically incentivizes you to use it.

But if you happen to be going to that store anyways and you get an additional chase offer for that. Certain place you're getting free money right there now the biggest benefit with Chase is that you're actually able to use this cashback and transfer it to some of your other higher elite cards. So I'll see people who get the Chase Freedom Card, but then they actually just blow all their points on getting a gift card or getting some type of accessory or item with it. That's not the way.

I recommend you guys to do it, save all your Chase. Freedom cashback points, because what you guys can do is transfer that out to some of these higher tier cards like the Chase, Sapphire Preferred the chase, Inc, business preferred or even the Chase Sapphire reserve. It's very easy to transfer your points out to different things, and when you guys do this, you will actually be saving yourself a lot of money, because you can improve the value of how much that's worth so say. I got a thousand points from my Chase.

Freedom Card, if I transfer that over to my Chase Sapphire reserve, that's worth automatically 50 % more if I use it in the chase Ultimate Rewards portal. But in addition to that, if you guys actually transfer your points out from the Chase Freedom to another travel card and then transfer that out to another airline or to another hotel like the world, a hyatt card, then you're gon na find yourself getting even more Redemption. And that's really how the whole credit card thing works. So don't blow all your points, you guys save it.

Wait till you get a higher tier card and then use it for that card. I've made a ton of videos just explaining how this all works. Now the chase freedom does sound like a very good card, but the reason why I place it under the discover it card is because you usually, if you have no card at all Chase, is really reluctant to accepting these newer applicants, unlike Discover so generally Discover's gon Na open their arms and accept as many new applicants as possible when I had no credit or anything at all, Discover accepted me, but I've heard of people doing the same thing and going with chase, but they actually got rejected. Your miles may vary on this.
It depends on the time of year depends on. The season depends on how many people they're letting in, but for the most part, it's going to be easier to get accepted for a beginner card with Discover. Then it is compared to if you went with chase the next card on my list is gon na, be the city double cash and I often never promote the city brand. I usually just stick with three brands and that's chase American Express and also discover.

I usually don't talk about City just because they are considered a subprime lender and what that means is their cards are geared towards people who fall in debt and they want to be able to monetize themself off of the interest rates rather than the interchange fees that I find is a big, important thing in terms of a company's more Rao, but I do understand the type of market they are in and I don't blame them for it. But in this instance I do recommend the city double cash card, just because this card does offer you two percent back on everything. Now two percent back for a beginner card is not too bad just because the freedom unlimited, which I would say, is a good rival, for it would be 1.5 % cash back compared to the 2 % back now there is that argument where you can transfer the Chase freedom, unlimited 1.5 % into a travel card like I just mentioned, but if we're talking about ease of use cash back, just something you can generally use without having to worry about transferring and things like that, then the 2 % is obviously gon na beat the 1.5 % back now, I would never recommend the city double cash for anything else. American Express offers a card called the blue business cash, which also gives you two percent back, but that's within American Express which has better customer support, which has freedom with their points, which has a lot of other benefits, including the prestige of using their card.

This is the one time I recommend the city double cash, it's for beginners, if you're looking to get into the credit card game and you can't get accepted for any of the cards, chances are you're gon na get accepted for the city double cash card. They accept a wide variety of applicants and this card is pretty solid. Just for anyone getting into the game, it has no limits, no annual fee, two percent back on everything, so the city double cash card - is going to be next. The list and the main reason for that is just because of how simple it is to use yes, they're, not the best issuer.

Yes, they don't offer you points, but it's so straightforward. It's just straight cashback, it's straight to the point, and you understand what you're getting for that car now. What I do believe is gon na make this one of the best starter cars if they actually had a welcome bonus, feature added to this car. For anyone who doesn't know what that is it's one of those promotions where, if you spend X amount of money say you spend five hundred dollars.
They're gon na give you $ 150 cash back. Those things are easy ways for you guys to actually accumulate a lot of cash back, especially in the beginning of your credit card journey. The city. Double cash unfortunately does not offer that other cards like the chase freedom cards do but the city double cash does not at the moment.

Last but not least, the next card on this list is gon na, be the American Express blue cash card. American Express is surprisingly, very easy to get accepted, for a lot of people are gon na just rush into these subprime lenders, and they often forget that American Express has their own variety of beginner star cards. The American Express blue cash everyday card is a perfect example of that in this card actually comes with a welcome bonus as well after you guys, spend a thousand dollars in purchases on your new card in the first three months of your card membership they'll actually give You guys a hundred and seventy five dollars back. That's a lot of bread right there now, in addition to that, you guys will actually get 3 % cash back at US.

Supermarkets, 2 % cash back on gas stations and 1 % cash back on all other purchases. Like all the other cards mention, this card has no annual fee and American Express is known for their really good customer support. I put them right on par with Discover. Now.

All the cards I mentioned were really in no particular order. Yes, I do have some biased with discovered just because that was my own first credit card that I got as my beginner starter card. So, at the end of the day, what I recommend to you guys is to do your own research to figure out what your spending habits are and then to apply for a card that way now. The route that I recommend a lot of people to go is just start with any of the starter cards that I mentioned in this video and then your second card.

You want to get a chase freedom or chase freedom, unlimited card to begin your relationship with Chase because of a rule called the chase, 5:24 rule and I'll have that guide linked above right here now this chase 5:24 rule that you guys will continue to hear within Your span of your credit card journey - it's something you guys need to take into consideration just because chase points are very valuable, they're very easy-to-use, but this rule prevents you from getting as many chase cards as you want. So you want to be able to knock out your chase cards first and then get into the other cards that you would like now guys like always if you are interested at all in any of the credit cards that I have mentioned, I do have affiliate links Down below they're always listed in my videos and if you guys are looking to support the channel or if this video helped you guys out in any way shape or form you guys would like to give back. That is just a simple easy way to do it, but there is no obligation to use those links down below if some of the cards that I mentioned have referral links that you know your friends or family. Have I recommend you guys to take that and just to help them out, but if you guys do want to support the channel without losing anything, that's just a simple way to build.
Now really hope this video did help you guys out and if it did, let me know down below in the comments exactly what your first starter credit card is and what credit card you're interested in applying for next, I'm really curious to see what the comments are. I feel, like generally, people are gon na go with a Discover Card like I mentioned just because they do a good job at the fundamentals and they accept a lot of new applicants, but there may be a shift in the market. Maybe more people start going for the city double cash or maybe even the American Express a blue everyday cash card. We really don't know so guys.

Let me know what your thoughts are down below and I hope I see you guys in the next one pop pop pop. She come back here.

My starter card was Cap One, then Discover (Secured). I now hold Amazon Prime Visa (Chase) and one store card J Crew. I recently had an issue with my puppy, I applied for Care Credit. I didn't know it was a card, I thought it was a loan. So now I have that. My next card hopefully is Amex Everyday. I won't apply until May 2021 or so.
