Even though the term “Quiet Quitting” has existed for well over a decade…the RECENT trajectory is all thanks to a viral TikTok, which summarized that - even though you’re not outright QUITTING YOUR JOB - you’re quitting the idea of going “above and beyond.” You’re still performing your duties, but you’re no longer subscribing to the “hustle culture mentality” that work has to be your life - and that, your worth is not defined by your productive output.
However, the reality is: “acting your wage” will come at the cost that - long term, you’ll likely have a much harder time getting a promotion, working up to new opportunities, or even keeping your job - IF that’s something you value.
If you’re the type who WANTS recognition, who WANTS to grow within their career, and WANTS to eventually make more money…it’s often BETTER to give a LITTLE MORE than expected, and by doing so - you make a lasting impact that sets you apart from the competition.
In addition to that, it also serves as your safety net in the event we DO enter a severe recession with mass layoffs…because, like it or not…throughout recessions, we tend to see a COMPLETE contraction across the entire economy, including job losses.
I would take this EXTREMELY SERIOUSLY…because, even though it’s easy to “quietly quit” while unemployment is at an all time low, since 1955 "the U.S. economy has always experienced a recession within two years from every quarter in which inflation was above 4% and unemployment was below 5%, as they are today.”….and, on top of that…the unemployment rate has NEVER held below 3.5% for more than a year.
From my perspective, it’s totally okay to set boundaries in terms of your work/life balance…but, it shouldn’t be surprising if someone else gets the promotion, or a better opportunity - and that needs to be factored in, at least to SOME degree.
Of course, on the flip side: employers can’t simply expect their employees to keep 1-upping each other for a raise that doesn’t match inflation - plus, I’m sure it’s also demotivating to see the person who slacks off, getting paid the same as the person who takes on extra work, so, companies NEED to cultivate an environment where there CAN be incentives along the way.
Now, as far as what YOU could do about it: honestly, if you’re the type who’s happy with what they’re doing, self-motivated, and has a clear path for what you want, this is an opportunity to stand out in the workplace, and solidify yourself as someone who indispensable for the company. It could also be a great time to look for other work that’s more personally fulfilling, or - creates a better environment for what YOU want out of life.

I stopped working really hard and just did the minimum, and started feeling like my pay was fair. Then started working from home, and I was actually enjoying it. Finished a days work in a few hours and spent rest of the time learning to trade. Was a win. Still got that job though.
No such thing as quiet quitting. Neither is this movement "new". Thanks for pointing this out, Graham.
got it quit your job do youtube
I am sorry, but doing more does not give you more recognition in a company. It is usually the new guy who gets the reward for your hard work. If not, why does the one who change jobs ends up earning more? and gets the promotion you have been fighting for? It is sad, but the only thing that matter is being unique so you can negotiate but no one is
mmmmh a very average dollar
Quiet quitting has helped people feel more in control of their work balance life.
comment this Graham
Kids aren’t taught to give it their all anymore
I’m thinking about it for higher wages
After climbing up the corporate ladder to management multiple times(quarters more pay, multitudes more responsibility and a now compounded expectation to go above and beyond) just to be disregarded, mistreated, undervalued, have your benefits cut/taken, and still ultimately be disposable. This is the reality for the majority of the work force and has been for a while.
This drove me to ultimately quiet quit while looking for another employer at my last few jobs over the last few years. Now I'm getting paid way more, in an great work environment where I feel appreciated and like what I do, but I have a very particular job in a particular field.
Quiet Quitting is just a recently popular way to refer to a long existing dynamic brought about by shitty corporate structures, stagnate wages, and borderline abusive employers. Anyone who isn't out of touched knows this, and has probably lived/experienced it or still is.
Nepotism, brown nosing, flirting and stealing other people's work is what gets you ahead. It is naive to think otherwise!
Zoom stock about to skyrocket
Opportunity of a lifetime as we speak to jump into the creation of passive income streams by pursuing your passions. At this point, no real need to be bound down to clocking in and out.. or at least do both… I quit my job to pursue some passions and never looking back on it..
😂😂and here I thought I was quiet quiting was only possible in YouTube… anyway love the show graham
I skipped your Ad-Vert, GRAHAM STEPHAN.😮🤣👍🥂
It's the greed, the greed is killing the working man.
Seems like 90% of us can barely afford to live let alone have the means to pay for our hobbies and lifestyles. It sucks to work just barely get by.
God forbid employees going over and beyond what they are paid to do for the purpose of making someone else rich! When did free labour become an entitlement of the employer?
So you go above and beyond what you agreed to do for a certain wage for the opportunity to have said company who benefited from that work to then dictate how much they compensate you in retrospect, all the while expecting to come out ahead? Why wouldn’t any company exploit this? That’s putting a lot of faith in a business to act opposite of what helps their bottom line. Businesses are never going to do what’s in your best interest because you work hard. Their goal is self preservation by any means and that almost guarantees exploitation, as the end will always serve the business first in both the long and short term.
90% of your increased productivity and the credit for it goes to the shareholders of the mega corporations, as is shown by the statistics of the last 30 years. just seems like the Waltons and gates and bezos just need a little bit more of your life and then they will be happy
I quietly smashed the like button, with little noise and drama.
My company gives company script as an incentive to work harder that buys company branded shirts and water bottles… I am now part time while furthering my education.
I think the flip side to not “quiet quitting” sometimes is that you put yourself at risk for exploitation and burnout. It’s important to know when the extra effort will pay off, and when to conserve your energy in one place so that you can spend it more effectively somewhere else—like quiet quitting your dead-end 9-5 to invest that time in your own business. I’ve had more professional success setting boundaries—which I think is another term for “quiet quitting”—than giving 110% and praying someone will reward me for effort they never agreed to pay for in the first place. I think gender and work status plays a role as well, as do other factors. I think if you are a woman, doing free work is the norm, especially emotional labor or any kind of “building community” type work, and you need to set boundaries to gain respect. If you are a contractor, gig worker, or freelancer, you need to be wary of carrot-and-stick situations where employers bleed you dry with the promise of something permanent, and you need to start thinking of yourself as your own business. I am a huge fan of your channel and really appreciate your balanced approach to these topics!
Well, inflation, people can buy less, no raised = less motivation
Of course its happening work places dont value good workers
You are absolutely wrong. The guy that does more work gets punished with more work without a raise and promotion 95 percent of the time
Well I quit April 2021 … but for medical reasons 😅 next thing you know you are self employed 🙈🤷🏼♂️
you should do a video on current terrible wages that add to quiet quitting
hello
It’s problematic if “🎉YOU WORK AS EXPECTED”
