Germans' conflation of nuclear power with nuclear weapons led them to close their nuclear power plants in favor of renewables, which need constant fossil fuel backup, making them dependent on Russian natural gas. If instead they had chosen to invest in more nuclear power plants, they'd have 100% carbon-free electricity and energy independence, as well as lower rates.

If you check gas stocks around Europe they have grown a lot even though Russia has trimmed its supply. The shipping of Liquid gas has increased and will continue to grow but next summer Germany will be covered and simply wont need Russia Gas.

Germany will manage energy this winter, even without Russian gas. There still is a huge gas field in the Dutch province of Groningen, just 20 miles from the German border. Almost all of the flow of it's gas has been stopped, because it caused earth quakes that severely damaged homes. Still, in case of shortages this gas could temporarily be used to fill Germany's supply gaps next winter. By spring 2023 German gas supply shouldn't be a major issue anymore.

Its not just Gerhard Schröder. Its his whole Party, the Social Democrats (SPD). Angela Merkel from the Christian Democrats /(CDU+CSU) was not better. During her government time she was several times in a coalition with the Social Democrats. Merkel was also switching off the Nuclear Power plants after Fukushima. But it were the Greens who blocked building Liquid Gas Terminals.
It may be noted, Germany has currently 3 running nuclear power plants. It should be possible to have 3 more, means in total 6 running latest mid of next year.
Further North Germany (I think lower Saxonia) has a lot of gas in the ground. When starting with fracking I am nearly sure they could get 30-40% of the German gas demand from there for the coming 30 years.

Germany's problem is that a large portion of their population is progressive and thinks energy coming from their windmill farms and from solar power will be sufficient enough to sustain a modern society. Their lefties are aggressive verbally and at times physically too. Year after year their population grows by large margins because of their mindless immigration policies. Germany is the very country which the USA will be if the Democrats stay in power for decades: they have the highest immigration, some of the unsafest streets, very high taxation, a bad school system, their infrastructure starts to look like a joke. Yet their elites control EVERYTHING. It's a cerclejerk of politics, media, finance and institutions.
G Schroeder is being investigated to put him under similar sanctions as the Putin lickers.
I think the maintenance thing is partially true Russia has had some brain drain due to the war. Also western expertise is not available.
