A lot of people don't understand that the only purpose of a college degree is to show your potential boss. You turned up the class for three to four years in a row and completed a series of assignments reasonably well and on time. So if they hire you, there's a semi-decent chance that you'll show up every day and not mess their business up.
I think a college degree has more purpose than that when applying for like an engineering job.
Guys you have to understand that he is catering to his audience, idiots
Went to community college and got my associates. Then taught myself everything I needed to know for the job I have now. No student loans. Worked for me, but my brother is an engineer and absolutely needed to get his bachelors to qualify for his job. Depends on the situation, but kids who donโt know what they want to do probably shouldnโt be going into 80k of debt for a bachelorโs they wonโt even use.
Give it to me worked my assoff divid check book break in
Aha I saw this charade when I qualified
Bull shit, college also you know, teaches you things. Yes you can teach yourself those things, but education in a college is very different and you get followup from teachers that know what they're talking about. I'm so tired of this anti-higher education nonsense.
I'm sorry but this is really a dumb take. I learned a whole lot at my university, which made me end up at a job I am really good at, and I really love to do.
Employee showing up on time is very much desired by a lot of bosses!
Nonsense, the purpose of a degree is to enable you to look down with pity on losers who don't have one.
You say that like being able to stick with something difficult for 4 consecutive years is a meaningless attribute in the world. Iโve met plenty of people without degrees who clearly donโt know what it means to stick to something
tried the no college route, have ended up in shit minimum wage jobs, college degrees really is the way for those of us that have no other means to climb the class ladder
This only applies to very non specific degrees.
Not
Doctors
Lawyers
Engineers
Accountants
Nurses
Chemists
Biologists
Etc
So what happens when you have perfect attendance and only sucked at one class but still didn't get a diploma becuse the vice principal was my Neighbor and he didn't allow me to get my Diploma. Because he just genuinely didn't like me
so this Tulsa's quote means Unis are just creating a workforce or should i say slaves
โCollege is just for funโ – Elon Musk
Yeah, but that is valuable information
I think it depends on the degree youโre going for. If youโre going for some feminist dance theory degree (or whatever bull shit) then yea i agree. But if youโre going for a STEM degree, then I have to disagree
People with a college degree in the U.S make $20k more than those without a degree. You still have to do something with it but the idea that college is a scam is ludicrous
Id love to see someone without a degree in ohysics or mathematics solve a differential equation or learn to code a simulation lol
It depends on the degree. Communications, hospitality and creative writing, then yes. Medicine, engineering, pharmaceutical science, then no.
Nope. Not true.
This isnโt 100% what itโs all about but it is an under appreciated reason for why university is important. Yes you learn skills relevant to your chosen field but it also demonstrates to employers and society that you are dedicated and committed to having a serious career in that field. If we had a system where anyone could rock up to any job and try it out itโs going to be very expensive for employers to weed out who is serious and capable from who is not – they have a hard enough time working that out even with university graduates as it is. Graduates from top universities are also favoured not necessarily because of the quality of the education that they got there but because employers know that they had to be exceptional just to get in in the first place. The universities have already done a massive amount of screening for them.
Semi decent chance is better than zero chance
Lol sure
As much as Iโll go dig on someone for their college degree, thatโs a load of shit.
Thereโs college programs/majors that are worth it depending on career prospects. I agree the market is inflated with useless degrees and under qualified candidates but a decent program with a good alumni network can very quickly turn you around a good career. All depends how you play your cards.
Thereโs also the lesser emphasized part of college which is forcing you to think along multiple dimensions. That spirit has definitely been lost in much of academia considering how much just saying what your professor agrees with has become commonplace, but, thereโs still gems out there if you can find it
Let Bill gates explain further ๐
You definitely signed up to the wrong course
What the fuck?
thats called a useless degree, there are a good amount that offer you information you cant find elsewhere (mostly becauae its gatekept)
What about the different types of engineers?
Until you need someone to perform cardiothoracic surgery on you and some random plumber shows up.
Bullshit! Enroll in a really difficult subject and a leading faculty. Then you will see it is more than showing up: you proof cognitive abilities, you show you tackle challenges and even if you fall you stand up do this many many times, you show stamina,…. and you also gather knowledge, or improve your way of thinking….
E.g. doing a rather quantitative subject at a top school canยดt be done by showing up in classes… there is a bit mroe to it.
He's saying dumb things with a serious face.
The anti education brigades are really dumb
It's sad how the modern capitalist society dismisses and undervalues knowledge. Yes, college now seems to essentially be a tool to pump out workers in as short a time as possible. It isn't really anymore about a persuit of knowledge, is it? About having well-educated individuals.
We're on Earth for a limited time, but somehow we created a system where we learn a limited skillset to serve rich arseholes who profit from that labour. Why dont we value knowledge for the sake of it? Shouldn't we want to discover, understand the world, ourselves, fellow humans, culture, history, etc. in our short time here?
Also, this way we are getting undereducated cirizens who vote on issues they know very little about.
