Boiler room promotions … What are they?
Think “The Wolf of Wall Street” — a bunch of guys, sitting in a call center calling random people to try to get them to buy a stock. Yep, it still happens sometimes. The SEC really did a good job smacking down the brokerages that did these promotions. So most of the time, these aren't brokerages anymore.
But there's still a number of these promotions. And they continue to work. That’s great for the boiler-room owners — and it’s under the radar. Traders who follow stock promotions may not even notice anything ... And there's no obvious promotion out there unless we hear about people getting calls. So you gotta do your research.
These promotions can be great to short because investors are buying, not traders. And when the promoters stop the promotion, they basically just pull the plugs on their phones and walk away. They just move onto the next stock, and then nobody wants to buy the stock.
So you can see a stock drop from a few dollars a share down to 10 cents a share. That makes for a great short. And once it falls apart, it rarely bounces.
That said, these promotions can be rare and hard to find. It can help if you have someone to follow, maybe on a message board or Twitter. If you find a stock with an interesting chart that you think might be a promotion, search Twitter or message boards for evidence.
Some traders will literally play along by buying shares. Then they turn around and sell those shares back the next minute. They know how the boiler room works. And they know the minute that the boiler room stops making calls.
But these promotions don’t come around often ... maybe a few times a month. So if this is your niche, you need patience. If you find a boiler room promotion, chances are you’ll wait a while before you find the next one. But it can be a good addition to your other trading strategies. It doesn’t require a lot of time. And most of the time you’re not in trades, so it doesn’t take a ton of capital either. And when done right, the returns can be nice.

Wait, I'm confused. He said most go unnoticed because of low volume, but he finds them by scanning for volume. A low volume scan?
Thank you guys!
