Every trader should have basic checklists. Mental checklists can work, but it’s better to make an actual list that you check off item by item — especially for new traders. It’s one key way to help you focus and eliminate background noise.
You need to set criteria for every single trade. If you can't check off seven or eight out of 10 boxes, you shouldn't make the trade.
The market will change. And you’ll change and evolve as a trader, so your checklist will change and evolve too.
OK ... so you know you need a checklist, but what criteria should you put on your list?
Volume’s gotta be there. You also want a catalyst, something fluffy. You probably also wanna check the float and VWAP. It’s really about your strategy. But bottom line? Keep it simple. One big mistake traders tend to make is that they’re all over the place.
Narrow it down. You don’t have to look at everything. But you want plays that will likely have that continuation.
Here’s a great analogy to put it into a simple perspective...
If you're a business owner looking to hire somebody, you'll collect resumes … To go through them efficiently, you need to quickly filter any that aren’t up to par with your needs.
It's no different with stocks! Sometimes, there’s just too much noise. But with some legwork and a solid checklist, you can learn to filter through stocks to find smarter plays.
