Hello, everyone and welcome back to a new video, shawn's name and youtube's the game today, so i'm getting ready to release my updates for my youtube mash class for 2021, which i do every year and as i was adding and updating a ton of content this year. I figured let's drop a little free 99 nugget of knowledge for something that is incredibly underutilized on youtube right now. That is something that is very new. We're talking about these awesome little video chapters that you see at the bottom of the video player of this video and all of my future videos moving forward.

Some people will call them video titles or or segments or little squiggly lines along the time code. Youtube classifies them as video chapters. So that's what we're going to call them. I think they're sweet.

So i want to show you how you can do it on your own video. First up, if you want to solve global warming, cure the pandemic or obliterate world hunger, then you're going to want to hit that like button on this video. Okay, in all seriousness, adding video chapters to your youtube videos is actually a fairly new feature as youtube just implemented this on may 28, 2020. So it's pretty fresh and the coolest part about it is.

This is a feature that youtube implemented that was actually community driven for once the community said: hey youtube, we're doing these things and we like it. If you could add this type of a feature on the platform and youtube was like yeah, let's freaking do it and they did it. Usually it's like hey youtube. Can you do these things on the platform? We'd, really appreciate it and they're like yeah.

Instead of doing those things, we're gon na, do the complete opposite does that work? So that's pretty cool, but i think the main reason why youtube actually added this on their platform is the fact that there's just so much content on youtube and so much content on the internet in general. That video chapters really help keep things concise and keep people kind of looking at what they're trying to find it kind of just makes it a win-win for the creator and also for the viewer. For example, if someone's got you know, a 20-minute break and they're gon na go, i'm gon na watch youtube for 20 minutes. Well, if they waste 10 minutes of their break, watching a video that they really didn't want to watch.

They only needed to see about two to three minutes of that video. Well then, they kind of wasted all that time and they're, probably not gon na, have the best impression or feeling of youtube in the future and they're gon na say i'm probably gon na waste. A ton of time on there, instead of actually finding what i want. So i think video chapters keeps things like really concise and with that being said, i actually want to keep this video as concise as possible, as well you're, here to find out how you can add video chapters on your video.

So i want to show you right now without beating around the bush this. This is exactly how you set video chapters on a video. It is so basic and i feel like youtube was like hey, you know it's technically not broken, so we're not gon na fix it, but that's it. There's literally no fancy way of doing this and i kind of say that it's something that was community driven, because if you go back and look at videos that were made, you know like way back.

2012. 2013, like you know, tons of videos, you'll see a lot of creators actually putting in their description. You know time stamps and time codes for their viewers and they can click them and just kind of go directly to the um to the part in the video. But youtube was like we're going to take that one step further and actually put a little nice little progress bar at the bottom to kind of help things out.

So that's kind of cool and it's really simple, but before you're like sean thanks for the information bye, i'm gon na stop watching your video. Now you have to start your time codes with zero, zero dot, dot, zero zero! If you do not start with that in your description, youtube will not pick it up and you will not see the video chapters on your video and you're gon na be really pissed off and you'll, be like sean. What the heck it's not working. Things must have changed, blah blah blah blah so make sure you do that and to actually be 100 certain that you're doing it correctly we're going to actually go through and do an example of an older video of mine right now.

Okay, so i want to show you this on a video of mine. That's, i think, actually very underutilized, and i think a lot of creators on youtube can find some really good value out of it. So i want to make sure that we had video chapters on it so to do that, i'm just going to go into my i'm just in my youtube studio right now and we're just going to search for the video that we want to add it to this. One right here i'm going to go ahead and hit edit on the details, just so we're in the description of the actual video itself you can see.

This is the description right here. Okay, very basic! I think i posted this video um where's the published data. Pretty long time ago, we'll just say that pretty long time ago, um and then all you got ta do. Is you just somewhere in your description? So i'll probably put it? I don't know somewhere right here.

I'm gon na start with our video chapters. So i'm gon na start with my 00.00 okay and then actually i want to pull up the video in a separate tab, so i can see which part of the chapters are relating to which part of the content all you got. Ta do is watch your video back and see at what time you do what things. So i pretty much know at the beginning until my intro, it's gon na - be the intro so right at the end of the intro here, which is about 47 seconds in maybe a little bit sooner 44.

46. So about 46 seconds. So i'm gon na come back to here. I'm gon na go zero and i'm just gon na name whatever.

I want it to to show up as the name i'm going to put introduction. If i can type introduction and then i'm just going to go 0.40 we're going to do 46 and i'll add another zero just to be safe, this is where we actually start whatever the content is in the video. So go back. Watch your videos see which part of your video this is about after watching it, i can kind of tell that up until about a minute, 25-ish minute 26.

I talk about why it's so important, so i'm just going to say importance of tool and then i can go 0 1. I set up until about what up until about we'll say, 25 and then we'll do the next one, and this is pretty much um. This is why it's so important - and this is kind of um - how it works. So i'm just gon na.

Do it right here, i'm just gon na say how uh tool works and then we'll see how long that goes for, and you pretty much just do that throughout your entire video and once you're done it'll. Pretty much look like this. You don't have to add your zeros in front of these numbers. The only one you do have to do is this one, but i like to add them sometimes just keep it a little bit cleaner if possible, and once this is done, i mean that's literally it.

Okay, you just have to hit save and once it's saved you can go check and see if it's working so you'll click view on youtube. You'll go watch the video and after we look at this awesome ad, that um hyundai got two two ads for one got a twofer hit skip and there you go. You got your introduction that we just that we just written out, wrote out importance of tool. We got how tool works, creating the tool for yourself common mistakes and channel growth and where to find more information, and it looks really clean and if someone's there just to see um, maybe how it works or how the how to create the tool for themselves.

They can do it just like that and as quickly as possible, and while this feature is very new to youtube and there's not as much data behind it just yet. I do think it is very beneficial for your channel. Some people will argue. Oh sean: that's going to hurt your channel because your viewer duration is going to go down because people are only going to watch one to two minutes of the video that they came there for and then other people are going to say.

Well, no, sean! I think that's going to be a lot better because they're going to get exactly what they wanted to get out of your video in those one to two minutes, so then they'll be like wow. This creator is really great. We're going to like we're going to comment. We're going to subscribe, we're going to share it with a friend and now that we have extra time we're gon na go, watch more videos from that creator which, by the way like you, should do all those things on this video.

So it's kind of up in the air and kind of depends on your perspective, if you're, a glass, half full or glass, half empty kind of person, if it's going to be beneficial to your channel, if you want my opinion on it, i am such a big Fan of just delivering phenomenal content to your viewers and if you deliver that phenomenal content, you're gon na grow, you're gon na see some success on youtube because those people are gon na, be your biggest fans they're going to tell all of their friends about it and You're going to grow organically, regardless of the youtube algorithm, but if you also want to talk youtube algorithm well, a lot of people don't take into consideration session duration session duration is how long a viewer actually stays on the platform watching multiple videos, kind of daisy chained Along and if you can be more efficient with your videos and keep people more, i guess engaged with the content you're creating, so they watch more and more and more and more videos end up pretty much staying on the platform longer. Well then, you're gon na be really successful, with the youtube algorithm as well, and i know that was probably over a ton of people's heads right there, but i just want to say that youtube does come around full circle. If you provide great content, you will get rewarded for it. I promise i'm a big fan of small steps, big moves because it's a grind and the more hard work you put in the more people are going to see that.
