Prk surgery is probably the most technologically advanced thing I have seen in so long. It is so freaking mind-blowing what surgeons are actually able to do to your eye the process literally, it blew me away, yo, what's up guys, alright, so check it out. I've been a little bit out of commission lately because I had eye surgery, and I want to talk to you guys about that real quick. I had a I had eye surgery, I'm not I'm not getting into vlogging okay.

So just so you guys know that. But I was at the lake today because it's the first time I can go back to the lake from having eye surgery, because I'm gon na tell you all about ice urger on my way home today. But I figured what better way to start this video than to be at the place that I love be nuts, so I'm gon na tell you guys a little bit about my eye surgery experience. I had PRK surgery, which is very interesting, very unique and I figured I'd just make a little video on it again, I'm not really going the vlogging route.

I used to vlog way back in the day on a different channel of mine, but I figured you know a little bit of a change for for this. This video on this channel would be kind of recording it while I'm in the car - and I just came back from filming some stuff at the lake - so I was like got my camera gear. Let's talk about PRK surgery, because so many people are so interested with it. Cuz there's a lot of people out there who can't really see you wear contacts, glasses.

I've been wearing contacts glasses, my whole life, so I figured you know. A lot of people are always looking up: lazy compete, PRK and high surgery in general, so I was like alright, you know what let's make a little video on it. So, first of all, like I said, I have not been able to see for like the past week or two, it's been really brutal. You can't actually go in bodies of water, so I don't know if you guys can see the lake it's over there.

You can't actually go in bodies of water because you could get your eyes infected, so I literally had a laser burn, my eyeball, and now I can see perfectly like what now I don't care what anyone says. Your most important sensory feature on your body is your vision. I don't care what anyone says. Hearings very important, you know, touch all stuff, but if you didn't have your eyeballs, your life changes a ton and honestly, like I said for the past week or two, it's been very hard to function because I haven't really been able to see.

So, let's start from the beginning: okay, so for those you who don't know, I've actually been pretty blind. Like my entire life wow, it's packed. People are going to Lake, it's like 8:00 a.m. I'm, I'm leaving the lake.

Excuse me. I've been blind like my entire life, I got glasses at the age of like seven or eight, and I was pretty much pretty much blind. I mean my prescription is like- 4.25. Also for those of you with glasses or contacts.

You know what that means yeah. So I pretty much couldn't see, and I remember the day I got glasses or contacts whatever I remember, looking out the car window and going holy smokes like there's actually leaves on trees that you can see like what I thought it was just like green. So I've been very blind. I got contacts at the age of I want to say nine, and so for the past, like 15 years or something I've been wearing contacts every single day and it's something that I hate has been a huge part of my life.
For those of you who don't have contacts or glasses, you wouldn't really know, but I literally the first thing I do when I wake up is put my contacts in the first thing I do before going to bed is. Take my contacts out. I mean it's like a constant thing that you're always doing. I can't just like lay down in bed, watch a movie and fall asleep like you can't do that.

You got to go. Take your contacts out before bed. So it's a huge part of your life and at one point you know when I was like in fifth grade or something modern I was maybe like 15. I was like, I want to get LASIK eye surgery, so I never have to deal with this again and I need to reiterate like how blind I was you go into the eye doctor and they got that big ol e up on the screen like I couldn't See that the only reason I knew wasn't ease because everyone knows it's an e like I literally could not see that.

So you know it was a big part of my life that I needed to have contacts or glasses to really see anything now with contacts or glasses. Oh, I was 20/20 vision like every time I had my contacts in I was. I could see perfectly and a lot of people don't really know that I've. I was like this.

I was basically blind because I were contacts 365 days out of the year like I wore them every single day at Sholay's it back to the topic of this right problem. Is you cannot get corrective eye surgery so LASIK, whatever cataract, P? Okay, whatever you can't get that stuff, unless your eyes stop developing, stop changing so when you're growing your eyes are changing a ton like my prescription got worse and worse and worse, the older I got until about 18 17 years old, where it stopped. It was constant and they need to see like multiple years where your vision has stayed the same, because the last thing you want to happen is I'm going to correct your vision and then your vision gets worse and they're like we'll shoot. So.

Finally, when I went in right after my 23rd birthday, it was like a week after my 23rd birthday, the eye doctor said: hey Shawn, have you ever thought about eye surgery, and I was like every day of my life every day I put in contacts and she's, Like well, I think you'd be a great candidate for it. Now your eyes have been very constant on. I think we should. We should get you into LASIK and I was like sign me up: I'm ready to go, don't care the cost like.

Let's do it and then I met with the surgeon who does the the eye surgery funny story? Actually I just saw him at the lake on his own boat. Like I don't know, the guy personally, I just saw him on his own boat and was like subdued, but anyway met with that guy originally, and he said he measures my eye. Does all these tests and goes sorry dude you're, not a candidate for LASIK and I'm like dude? I was so hyped up now. You bring me way down here, I'm not a candidate for LASIK, this sucks, and so he goes yeah.
You know you're, not a candidate for lazy, because you're cornea is too thin, because your vision is so bad that we have to remove a lot of your corner weight. We have to go in deep to correct it, and you know he's like he's like you. Just it doesn't work. Your cornea is too thin for that here.

So we can't do a zit. He was, but we can do PR k. Pr K stands for photo. Refractive carrot Amin Tommy.

I don't know something like that. Basically PR k doesn't do what lays it does so LASIK goes. They remove they basically flap open. Your eyes sounds disgusting.

They make a flap in your eye right, so they build this flap up. They put in essentially like a a permanent contact or they go ahead and reshape the eye thing you do and then they put the flap back and it heals and it's a 24 hour healing thing. It's super simple super easy there's like no real blindness with it before, like you know anything after 24 hours like you're, totally good, and it's like you can't do that. You guys your eyes.

Are you guys are too thin, so I said alright PRK the difference. Is they don't do a flap? They basically reshape your eye. They go much deeper in and essentially just completely fix your eye. So real, quick I'll drop, some knowledge on you.

When you don't have 20/20 vision, it's not necessarily your eyeball, that's wrong! It's essentially the from what I from what I understood, I'm no I'm no eye doctor, but it's essentially, the layers outside of your eye are different shape, so I have a stigmatism and basically that means that, like my eyes are shaped, I think, like a football, if I remember correctly, and so they're not shaped perfectly and that's what distorts my vision. So surgery goes in and basically reshape sit correctly, and they do that with the use of tiny, tiny lasers that end up burning away. The flaps are reshaping the way that it needs to be sounds pretty disgusting anyway. Doctor says Sean, you can do PRK surgery and I'm like alright, I'm down.

Let's do it, he goes, but the only downside is it's a much longer recovery period and I'm like dude. I've had shoulder surgery finger surgery, mouth surgery like I've, had so many surgeries like laid on me. I was like what are we talking two months and he goes no. It's it's it's about two weeks of really tough recovery and about a month of 100 % recovery and I'm like all right.

It's nothing. He goes, but your vision is gon na be very bad. During that time now I will say when I actually went down to actually meet with the lady and pay and do all that stuff. She goes yeah.
So you know, PRK surgery is gon na, be about three grand and I and I'm like whoa whoa. So I was not feeling that, but um I ended up actually getting a family friends discount, because my mom is friends is one of the ladies that works there. Whatever I got a a really good deal on it and I was like you know what? Let's do it, let's go ahead and do it and then, like we'll schedule in next week, I was like, oh god, alright, let's do it and for those you don't know, you know I make youtube videos right on multiple channels, but I also I'm a mortgage guy. In Arizona, so it's very hard for me to take time off work because it's basically the more time you take off the further and further you fall behind.

So I was like man, that's gon na be tough, but you know: let's do it. I go into surgery and let me explain to you this surgery process cuz, it was mind-blowing. Prk surgery is probably the most technologically advanced thing I have seen in so long. It is so freaking mind-blowing what surgeons are actually able to to your eye the process.

Literally, it blew me away so here's what happened. I show up on surgery day. I sit in the room. They check my vision like a million times.

They want to make sure they get it right check my vision again and they go okay. They're, like you ready and I'm like yeah. Let's do it now: I've, okay! Well we're gon na set up the room, we're gon na! Take you back there where you going. Oh, my god, let's go, it took me back.

There lay me down on a table right, lay me down and and first you know. First, the the surgeon assistants, whatever were like moving the table under one laser and she's like oh, this isn't set up and I'm like. What do you mean this isn't set up shows? Oh, that's the laser clinch because I forgot your PRK, I'm like what do you mean you forgot? I was like. Please don't mess up my vision.

This is my most important sensory feature on my body. I was like. Please do not mess this up. She's, like yeah you're, fine, oh my god, god this is bad already stressing it moves me under right.

Moves me under the correct the correct laser waiting for the surgeon to come in. Surgeon comes in. He comes at me, he's like hi dude, you ready and I'm sitting or going I'm just gon na sit here I was like. Are you ready? I was like you're the one doing the work but um, but anyway, so he goes.

He goes. Alright. You ready I'm like yeah, I'm ready, I'm like okay, let's do it and and pretty much you know I it was the simplest process I could have ever done come on come on. I'm on a stop sign come on come on, come on how people are so slow, come on come on tomorrow.

Tomorrow, wake has like the oldest people. I swear anyway. I pretty much lay down they tape, your eyelids open right, so they tape them open like this. They put a little machine machine like a little tool that keeps your eye like super open and then literally, what it felt like was him washing my eye right? So, first of all, the first thing I do is they put in a drop basically numbs, your eye, like a ton, numbs your eye, a ton and it felt like he was washing my eye right like he took his finger.
It was almost just like scrubbing it away. Well, I looked it up afterwards and he actually takes a little knife and he's basically cutting away a layer so hoping that doesn't ruin if you're thinking about getting PRK but basically cuts cuts, a small layer open and then takes a little like cleaning tool wipes. It really cleans it really nice, then they put some eye drops in right. They put some more eye, drops and clean it, whatever all, except make sure it's like super spotless, and then he goes.

Okay, Shawn stand under the laser, for you know ten seconds and I was like stare into the laser. They patch your other eye and I'm staring at a laser and then like I could smell. They don't tell you this. I could smell my eye burning, but it didn't freak me out because I am I had mouth surgery before where I could smell my gums burning.

So I was used to the smell, but you could smell your eye burning and I'm like. Okay, it's a little freaky and then literally after 10 seconds like alright, it's done they splash in, like some cold fluid and then they take. They cover that eye and they do the same thing together. I swear both eyes took maybe five minutes the entire process.

Five minutes after five minutes, they go okay, you're good. How do you feel I'm like? I feel fine? What's the problem I was like? Is it fixed? I stay. I stand up from the bench and I can see like not 20/20, but I can see pretty well and I was like well, it's just kind of cool and they're like yeah they're, like you know, buh buh buh, buh buh. They walked me into the other room and I go okay.

We're gon na give you some Tylenol PM. Want you to go home. We want you to pass out. We want you lights out when you get home.

I was like all right. I go home pass out. Five hours later, wake up completely blind. I was like holy smokes now when I say completely blind: it's not.

I get you pitch black. Okay, you still, you can still see what it basically made me feel like was that I need to put my contacts in. I was like, I can't see anything. I can't even put my contacts in it's all just blurry, I couldn't read my phone and and basically what happens is they burn the I write they reshape it, but then your eye has to heal and it basically heals from the outside in so think of it, Like a scab like it's healing like a scab over your eye and that's what makes your vision bad so then for the next three days, I couldn't see anything it was.

It got worse over the next like three days and basically couldn't see anything because this, like scab, basically was healing over and making my vision really bad. So it was tremendously hard to work. Considering that I do a lot of work on my phone and I couldn't actually read my phone okay, so that really sucked, but then um. You know after about the fourth day they say after the third but I'll say after about the fourth day.
That's when you can actually like kind of start, seeing a little bit better and then, after about the sixth day you're like okay, like my vision, I'm doable now, I can do everything that I can function with. It's not good, and then I'd say after about the twelfth day, you're like pretty solid, I'm on the 15th day now 16th day now, and it's almost like I'm 2020, they say after two weeks, you're gon na be really awesome. But then, after a month, they're gon na be money, and I know a lot of people will probably search this video up and - and you know, watch it when they're thinking about getting PRK surgery. So I don't want to say that it's terrible and your vision is awful.

You can't function, but right now go down into the settings of this video and change it to like 244 P or like whatever the lowest quality settings you can put and try watching the video. Like. That's how you see life. All I did was lay on the couch for those 3-4 days and watch movies, but really I was watching shapes in movies and listening to the audio.

It was so hard to see so like seriously. It's like you're watching a video on 244 resolution like it's terrible. So if I had to do it again, I would 100 % do it. I recommend everyone.

Does it if they're thinking about getting it? However, I will say the only pro of it is the amazing vision cons super expensive. It's an elective surgery. Insurance is not covered. Pretty much anything okay, so it's elective surgery, so it's very expensive recovery is awful, literally terrible.

I had six months of shoulder, recovery and honestly I'd say that they're both like pretty similar, I mean very miserable time and for me I go to the lake like twice a week. I couldn't go to the lake, so that was terrible and then also there's the uncertainty. Everyone's always scared about. Well, if I do PRK what are the risks and my surgeon and Walt while he's a surgeon and everyone in the office was pretty much saying, there's no real risks or like the worst-case scenario, you go back to what your vision was before and you wear contacts You know you lose a lot of money in the process, but they said it had like a 99.9 7 like success rate like it's one of the most successful surgeries in the world and I'm a finance guy.

So I have to relate this to finances. Somehow it financially makes sense if you get this done at a young enough age, so you roughly spend $ 300 a year on contacts. Okay, that's with insurance $ 300. You, if you don't have insurance way more.

So it's 300 dollars a year on contacts. Let's call it another hundred dollars a year on contact eye solution, maybe a little bit less than that, but let's just call it $ 400. A year after about 12 years, that surgery is gon na pay for it. 12 years and you get a return on investment plus, that's not even factoring in the fact that time is the most important asset and you save so much time with this.
For example, it only takes you what 2 to 3 minutes in 24 hours to take your contacts out and put them in right after 10 to 12 years around. That range like at what, over a hundred and eighty hours that you saved a hundred and eighty hours come on the return on time. Investment on that should be worth it alone, Plus, like I said like now, I can lay in bed watch a movie and actually just fall asleep to the movie like I don't have to remember to I got to get up. I got to take my contacts out when I go camping.

I don't have to worry about. Oh, how am I gon na do my contact. So when I go to the lake, I don't have to worry about what happens if I'm swimming in my contact comes out. Like I have to worry about any of that, the peace of mind is honestly incredible guys.

The technology is so freakin cool, like the fact that that little beam of light was able to make my life so much better. I mean it still blows my mind like for my entire life. I've been basically waking up and having to go to the bathroom put my contacts in for once in my entire life. I don't have to do that and it is.

It is incredible guys, but anyway that's the video I want to make for this channel. I know it's something very different, very unique. Maybe I'll do some more storytelling type. Videos like this, not necessarily vlogs um, I just figured you know.

I had a 30 minute drive from the lake to my house, so I figured I'd. Make this video tell you guys about this story. So do you guys enjoy this? If you guys want to see more stuff like this? Let me know please let me know in the comments also like the video subscribe. If you want to see more videos and until next time guys, I will see you in the next one.

I don’t remember that at all! I had PRK 2 weeks ago and I had no idea the doctor even touched my eyes and yes the smell!!!

Thanks for sharing this Video. I am plan get PRK. Because my doctor told me, my eye can only have PRK. I am so scared just to thinking about the whole process. But I m also so tired of wear glasses and eye contact lenses . I just don't know how risk is this surgery ?

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bharat Hegde says:

Best part of doing this in India is that it's much much cheaper. I got my PRK done for approx. $250 for each eye. Approx. $500 in total.

My surgury is the 31st. I'm leaning toward PRK even if they say I can get LASIK, the forever 'flap' thing creeps me out. -5.25

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Yg Bodybuilder says:

Pork causes more issues for people than lasik does plus the success rate is lower than lasik. That's why I don't want it and would rather do lasik. But but with lasik someone could knock you up side your head and your flap will fall off. I'm stuck between a rock and a hard space

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chimdi Ihezie says:

I cannot believe you used to wear contact lenses EVERY SINGLE DAY. That's wild. Thank you for making this video!! It's giving me the reassurance that everything is going to work out. My surgery is 10/22/20!! SO PUMPED.

Getting Prk done 1 week from today, been wearing contacts every single day for 8 years and I’m ready for this. I’m getting mine done for about 4 grand at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer eye institute so Im pretty confident it’ll go fine

Thank you for this video. I had cataract surgery with expensive upgraded lenses last Dec. I still have blurring and out of focus. I went to a specialist recommended by my surgeon, who diagnosed me with “bumpy cornea” aka Epithelial Basement Membrane Dystrophy. In two weeks I will have surgery to smooth the cornea, then, once healed and smooth, I will have PRK, because that’s my only option for clear vision at this point. You did such a great job explaining what to expect. All the best.

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars roguebot says:

Just got PRK yesterday to correct my left eye which was at a -10.25 with 3 diopters of astigmatism. In a bit of pain and discomfort but hoping for great results!

Thanks. Had a appointment early today for possible eye surgery. Wanted laser surgery but the doctor recommended PRK. They quoted $1900 per eye. Did not realize The recovery will be about two weeks. Thanks for that information. Just wanted to know if you’re vision does worsen over time, will they fix it?

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Isha. J says:

Thank you for this video. I had the surgery 2weeks ago on my left eye! I've been a little unsure if I should move forward to doing the right cause it not needed right now. But with all that's going on (COVI19) I think this is a perfect time to do it. I stay home. Plus my insurance will cover it all. I'm going to do it!

How old were you when you went to PRK?
Im 20 years old, and Im a candidate for PRK surgery, beacuse of dry eye… I dont Like to wear glasses,I wear contact lenses for Astigmatism , and by the way I train tennis.
My power for right eye -3,50 and left eye -3,00 and Astigmatism both eye -0,75.
Should I Do PRK in these years 20 age,or to wait for more 21-25 Age?
Im a little bit afraid of complications…

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Shawn Malkou says:

Update as of 11/18/2019 – Been about 8 months since surgery and I went in for my last checkup today… Right eye is 20/20 and left eye is even better at 20/15! Plus the doc said my eyes have healed perfectly and they see no major defects at all (in fact if I went to a different doc, they wouldn't be able to tell I even had surgery). Pretty incredible stuff!! My eyes rarely ever require eye drops now and they feel amazing. Can't recommend this surgery enough👍

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars JAY MAYHEM says:

    1. it wasn't a knife cutting your eye it was a brushing tool that removes the top layer. 2. You didn't smell your eye burning it was the machine which was burning off gama. Had mine done yesterday awesome experience.

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars RocknCorruptrepublic says:

I had flap striae (wrinkles) in my left eye from Lasik 3 weeks ago making my vision cloudy, so I basically got mini PRK done just over 24 hours ago (they scraped off the wrinkled epithelium and put a bandage lens over it). My vision is terrible in that eye now. haha. They did say 1-2 weeks, though I'm hoping it's a bit quicker since it wasn't full on PRK, and the laser part had already been done, but who knows. My right eye was slightly worse going in and is now kinda between 20/20-20/15… so I hope the left catches up!

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Athena DeLaPorta says:

23 days in and I'm just still SHOOK that kind of surgery exists and works! Mine didn't even hurt. The things I had to go through: light-sensitivity, consistency with the (lots and lots of) drops, and my nerves/annoyance because of the fact that I was feeling dependent from another person for the first 5-6 days

  28. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Thejosh says:

The reason you couldn't get Lasik is not due to how bad your vision was, it was because your cornea was too thin to create the flap you mentioned. In prk, they do not go deeper – it is nearly the exact same surgery as Lasik, however, instead of creating a flap of your cornea, they remove it by dissolving it with alcohol or scraping it off. The cornea then regrows over the course of several weeks.

  29. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Alexis says:

Why record yourself while driving? That’s reckless and unnecessary. What’s with people these days???? Can’t they just record at home?

  30. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Alexis says:

My eyesight is like -.5 , -1.75 I don’t know if is worth taking the risk of lasik.
