#DeltaSkyMiles #AmericanExpress
So Delta Airlines has announced some major I mean major news today. I Don't think today is a great day to be a Delta Flyer but it really depends on how you look at the situation. We have: Delta Sky Mile program changes, how you earn Mqd changes and also Delta Sky cut restrictions starting very soon. Let's pull the cat out of the bag from the get-go This is the biggest one in my opinion.
The entire way that we look at the Delta Sky Miles program and how you earn your medallion status per year is going to be changed for good now. American Airlines did something similar to this about 2 years ago. The only metric that's going to matter for Delta when it comes to earning Medallion status is going to be about the money baby. So Mqds, that's the only thing Mqds stand for.
Medallion Qualification dollars. It's all about the money now, so no longer does segments matter. No longer does mallin qualification miles matter. It's all about the money Dollars only starting on January 1st, 2024.
Depending on what status you you want to have, you have to earn specific Mqds which are Medallon qualification dollars. So if you are trying to get silver Medallion status you'll need to have 6,000 Mqds. If you want to be a gold medallion, you'll need 12,000 Mqds. That's what I am right now.
If you're looking to be a platinum Medallion, you'll need 18,000 Mqds. And if you want to be a Dion Medallion, you'll need 355,000 Mqds. Now how these are earned are going to be different now, especially when it comes to the Delta co-branded credit cards. and we'll get to that in a minute.
Let's keep it simple for right now. So let's just say Silver Medallion We've already discovered you have to have 6,000 Mqds to reach this status. You'll just have to spend $6,000 Now that would have to be only on Delta flights or their Partners So Delta Aero Mexico Airlines of that nature. You can also use the Delta portal for Delta vacations and book.
you know, hotels, rental, cars, vacation packages, things of that nature and you'll get one Mqd per dollar spend. What will make this hard for people who use the Delta co-branded CS like I do? To get at least silver or gold status is going to be the major devaluation of how you earn Mqds on the Delta Reserve card business or personal. For every $10 you spend, you'll receive one Mqd. So that means if you want to get silver status solely on your credit card spend with your Del a reserve card that you'll need to spend $60,000 us per calendar year to receive silver M status.
If you have the Delta Sky Mouse Platinum Card which in my opinion has been the most devalued thing I've seen in a very long time, you only get one Mqd per every $20 spent, so you'd have to spend $120,000 on that credit card to receive just silver Medallion status. Now for me, I have a good time getting upgraded with silver M status I Don't get upgraded every time. but for me and the routes that I fly to, it's all about the routes. If you're going from JFK to LAX just forget about it bro. you probably not going to get an upgrade. but if you're going a late night trip from Atlanta to Philly or Philly to Atlanta something like that which is typically what I'll do, then I'll get upgraded to at least Comfort plus and sometimes first class. It's all about the routes, but if you have to spend $120,000 just to get silver Medallion status I don't think it's worth it at all. That's what's going to start taking place January 1st 2024 So it's really going to be crucial for you guys to find a different strategy.
My strategy is going to be to really go deeper into the Delta ecosystem and this is what they want. In my opinion, they want you to do more than just fly. They want you to book hotels with them through Delta Vacations, rental cars, hotels. Etc If you can do those things, you only have to spend $6,000 per year.
and I did not put the word only in front of $6,000 to be Des sensitive to people situations. but for me I spend guaranteed about $6,000 a year or more on vac. So between my flights and my hotels, if I could find good deals to have status then I will. but I will not do this to be a try hard and just to have silver Medallion status if it is not cost effective for me.
So when it comes to Delta and the whole revamp and how the cob branded Delta cards been devalued moving forward for the next year, that is how you will have to earn your status. Now if that wasn't the best news for you, I have even worse news for you. Unfortunately, starting next year, how you get in into the Delta Sky Club will change drastically. Beginning on February 1st 2025, we got a couple.
We got major key changes actually starting next year January 1st 2024 if you have the Delta Sky Mouse card and again, the Delta Skymouse card takes the hardest hit in my opinion. With any of these cards, you no longer get access anymore regardless of your first class, if your comfort, Plus or anything. If you have the Delta Platinum Card you no longer get access to the sky Mouse Lounge As of right now, you can spend about 30 to 50 bucks I believe to get in starting next year 2024 January 1 No longer get that. For my people who have the platinum card or the Delta Reserve card, you have limits on how many times you can visit the lounge per year if you spend $75,000 per more in a calendar year.
So from January to December you get unlimited access to the Delta Sky Club if you don't spend $75,000 per year. you will still get access. But here are the limits for the regular AMX Platinum and the AMX Business Platinum you are capped at six times per year. For the Delta Reserve Personal in business, you are capped at 10 times.
If you are someone who has multiple products, let's say you have multiple products because maybe you're military. That's one of the best hacks right now of your military where you guys don't have an annual fee. So you can get the Platinum Card the Business Platinum Card the reserve card, the business Reserve card. You can add all of those together and have way more visits than I can have right without paying an annual fee. Or if you're someone who has the Delta Platinum card and the Delta business platinum card where you can combine that and get yourself 12 visits per year. Now keep in mind though, I'm sure this hasn't been confirmed yet, but I'm pretty positive that if your authorized user goes there and visits that will actually count towards one of your visits on your account. So keep that in mind too if you go with your authorized user or your authorized user goes when you're not around, that counts as a visit towards you when your annual visits per year. Another big one is if you fly Economy basic economy on Delta no matter if you have that Platinum Card like I just talked about or the reserve Delta Platinum car that I just referred to because you're flying basic economy, you will no longer be able to get access to the D Sky Club So these are the major updates.
There are a couple little other ones, but those are for people who are like million MERS and things like that I Think this right. Here is the concrete of what the biggest changes are that you'll see the most effect on. Some people will complain about it. Some people will close their cards.
Some people will try to find out a different strategy to retain Ain Delta status. Here's my take on it: I am not going to force myself into the Delta ecosystem even further. if I have to cough out more money while I do love flying with Delta and it is convenient if it doesn't make sense or I have to spend way more money just to be silver Medallion it is not worth it for me. My strategy going into the next year will be to try out Delta vacations to see if I can get really good deals comparable to Expedia Booking.com and I don't know if they maybe have price matches or things of that nature to spend that6 000 per more with them.
That way I could at least get my silver Medallion status and I'm also spending about the same price that I would with these other companies that I use. There is no right or wrong answer I Get it, the lounges are crowded Delta wants to cut back on that? It's the same thing American expression just did not too long ago. They also want to see us as consumers. give them more money just to be honest and that's in my terms.
but in their terms they'll do it the Corp way and say we want you to be more committed and have more options within Delta or be a part of their ecosystem. but to kind of just make it make sense and be straightforward. they want more money in their pockets. It's a win-win for Delta For them, they're not going to lose.
You know customers. Delta In my opinion as the best airline in the US as far as their customer service but I do want to know your opinion and how you feel cuz I'm talking to you guys. Will you guys maybe fly Delta more because you feel the lounges will not be as busy. Do you think this will improve your Local Lounge I am lucky here in Atlanta every Lounge is like 2 feet away. I can go this way this way this way and I can see a lounge I Don't have those problems here but I do understand the problems you guys may be seeing. Will you guys cancel your cards? Will you guys are applying for AMX cards? Let me know all your thoughts below. There is no right or wrong answer, but we are a community and again share this video. Leave your thoughts below.
You never know who's watching these videos. Trust me. I'll talk to you guys soon. Be safe.
Thx for the update. One thing you mentioned that concerns me is whether authorized users hit my 6 Delta Lounge visits with my Amex Platinum or whether authorized users get their own 6 visits while I get 6.
If you were military, which card would you recommend?
Terrible decisions but atleast now with main cabin u can change your tickets with no fees 😂 and get miles, delta is forcing hands and honestly for delta basic prices u can fly other airlines for waaay less cheaper and in these times that’s smart
If there's no changes how the miles are earned and redeemed then i can book flights with miles! The issue was lounges and they solved the problem. What they could've done was limit the number of times with how many people with all card holders visited the lounge. I always wanted the delta plat card but the fee was a deal breaker for me. I also hate how they made basic class not earn skymiles. May settle for blue just for the miles.
Yup deleting my platinum card in January! Switching airlines.‼️
Amex Platinum card got nerfed hard as hell in the last 8-10 months. There's practically nothing worth keeping it at this point.
Why would I PREPAY for services that I have to then work to recoupe (take advantage of the "amex partnerships") and NOT get anything in return for that(lounge access)?
It was an incredibly stupid move and unless they add something really interesting, I'm dropping Amex Platinum.
Delta and Amex are linked in this. Basically Delta and Amex did a bait and switch. They changed significantly the agreement we all signed up for. I don't necessarily care that I can't get a yogurt in the lounge but I resent their changing the contract and enjoying the perks that a $700/yr fee costs. My loyalty to these two companies has evaporated and been replaced with contempt. I will be cancelling all 4 Platinum cards and looking for any alternative to Delta.
Sucks if it not a traveler
I’ve already ordered a American Airlines executive platinum card. Delta sucks for this. Platinum here. That’s almost impossible.
By the way what’s your background music?
so amex teased all these people with lounge access, now all these people are forced to spend…consumers going to consume…nice trick delta
I'm probably going to look at alternatives to Delta based on where we're going. We have the Delta Am Ex Platinum card, but it doesn't seem to be worth it. One thing I haven't heard anyone mention is that we used to get one companion ticket with the AmEx card. Is that going away too? What about one bag free for check-in? If both of those go, I'm going to cancel my AmEx card.
Tom Stinkbutt Brady did this
Horrible news for sure. Smh.
Excellent update! thank you! THIS is why I don't do hotel or airline cards because of the constant devaluations. I prefer MR points or cash back since those tend to retain their value long term. Inflation hits harder with points due to the time, effort and money spent collecting them.
Can we say Chase Freedom!
What about existing MQM’s ?? I have 143,000 MQM’s. 75k will make me Platinum for 2024, but what happens to the remaining 68k MQM’s?? No one has mentioned that scenario. Tnx.
When the boarding announcement says “We Are Now Boarding Our DM Members” and half the group at the gate lines up you know there is a problem. The days of earning status on regional short hops and taking roundabout routing to rack up seat miles are gone. It’s all about the Benjamins
Do Amex Reserve AU’s get their own 10 SkyClub passes?
S/O to Frontier and the $299 Go Wild Pass. Centurion and Priority Pass me. Delta is cooked.
I don't think your AU vists will count, because you pay an annual fee for them, for them to access their benefits. But 18k MQDs?
As a Amex plat, and delta reserve card holder with platinum status, it's not worth it. My MQD were never even 2k. I used the qualifying card spend waiver. And spent 75k per year.
Can you get into the lounge with silver medallion status?
I've been spending towards platinum status the last few years, with various success using the regional upgrade certificates. We were planning to just focus on silver medallion, but the opportunity cost is just too high. I signed up for a 2nd BBP card, and am going to rack up MR points instead, as well as incorporate Hawaiian Airlines in the Pacific, other airlines as we venter elsewhere outside the US. I would be willing to book cruises through Delta, but they'll likely only give a fraction % towards MQD, if they ever offer it at all.
Never used lounges. Don't know why people are pouting. The point of travel is your destination location.
Do these changes impact your ability to fly Delta going forward?
