2021 has been a great year for investors with the stock market getting over 25% return over the year.
But I have managed to do a little better with my public Man Vs The Market portfolio getting a return of 75.8%.
To get to this return, I have had some big winners with stocks like AMD, Lucid Motors, Adobe and Tesla.
But I have also had some big losers with Fiverr, Palantir and Pinterest all getting smashed at the end of the year.
Overall I am very happy with how the year went and in this video I explain some of my thinking for why I did certain things during the year and how I plan to invest in 2022.

Hey guys, it's sasha, i have beaten up the stock market in 2021. In fact, i ended up completely smashing it. I ended up with a 75.8 percent return in 2021 in my public man versus the market portfolio in this video. I will share exactly how i smash the market in 2021.

I'll show you some of the big moves i made, and i will explain exactly why i made them i'll show you the big wins and the big losses that led to where we are i'll. Also tell you my plan for 2022 is and how i plan to navigate next year in investing and by the way my man versus the market portfolio is completely public. I have a number of different investing accounts on different platforms, but i started this small public portfolio as a challenge on my youtube channel. I made the first video in may this year when i started a portfolio and i give regular updates on this channel showing every single trade i make, and i explain why i make them.

I also have a discord for patreons and channel members where i share this information as i do it. So if you want to understand more about my decision making some of the intricacies of why, i think certain things, my stock target prices and know what i am doing as it happens, feel free to join here on youtube or through patreon, whichever you prefer. They do. The same thing and you'll be able to get these updates live rather than waiting a month or two for the update video.

So first let me show you the overall position so that you can see the numbers and i'll then go through some of the highlights and show you. My recent moves i'll then share some of my thinking and plans for next year. So here's my man versus the market portfolio, the current value - is 4 321.61. I started this portfolio on the 10th of may 2021 and i have deposited a grants total of 3 153.69.

Most of that came from two separate deposits that i made, and there were a few free shares that i got as well by the way. If you live in uk australia or new zealand, you can get yourself a free share with steak. By using my link in the description, all you need to do is click the link, open, an account and make an initial deposit of 50 pounds or 50, and you will get a free share that could be worth up to 150 u.s dollars all right. So you can see all the dates on which the money and the free shares were deposited into the account over here.

I then have this column here that calculates how much time has passed since then, and i work out the average balance weighted time at the bottom. So the portfolio here has an average deposit time of 6.7 months and here on the right i have my current portfolio value, which is just the same number that i just pasted from stake. So the total return so far is 37, but remember that the average amount of time that i've had the money in the market in this portfolio is only 6.7 months. So on an annualized basis, the return in this portfolio in 2021 is 75.8.

The stock market has actually had a very good year. The total stock market index, which is the benchmark i am comparing to is up 25.4 this year, but more than a half of that came before i started this man versus the market challenge from january. The first bit of the year was amazing. In fact, the portion that i am annualizing actually had the bit at the end when grace stocks got completely smashed, we'll come to that in a second, so my google sheet, i have calculated what the return would have been if i invested the exact same amount of Money, instead of into the stocks that i did, invest them into vti.
Instead, the total stock market index on the same date and the return on that would be 9.07 or 16.83 on an annualized basis. But, however, you look at it. I am extremely happy with the return i have managed to beat the total stock market return, even before i figure out the annualized version, having only been in the market for about half of the year, and this includes a massive growth stock sell-off at the end of The year, so that means that some of my positions at the moment are down a lot. Okay, so let's quickly go through the portfolio, you can see here that at the moment i only have four stocks.

The four stocks are fiverr pinterest, palantir and tesla, but my investments have changed over time. My objective with this portfolio is to be very aggressive and to try to beat the stock market consistently. I am targeting a return of 30 per year, which is incredibly difficult in the long term, probably impossible, but that's the whole point of this challenge. So i started out with a much broader portfolio.

I initially held a bunch of companies and had two other big positions in it that i don't have anymore amd and lucid motors. I was buying amd at about 77 and then again at 81, when i made that second deposit and then i also bought lucid at under 19, the first time around uh and i didn't actually end up buying any on the second deposit, because at that moment tesla Was on sale and i loaded up massively at about 600 per share. I then went and sold a few positions after that and consolidated, i sold adobe in august because the share price for adobe hit my target price territory. I made a video about it on the channel when it happened and i sold it on in this portfolio at exactly the same time, then i also bought a whole load of fiber shares at 175 when the share price collapsed after the q2 earnings report.

Fiverr has actually been hit super hard at the end of the year, so i am down massively on those shares at the moment. This is my biggest loser and then you can see that at the end of august and beginning of september, i bought some more lucid shares because i expected at that time, lucid's share price to explode. I talked about it. A lot on the channel i made at least one video explaining why i thought so and i bought those shares at twenty dollars and then for eighteen dollars just three days later and then just two months after that i sold all of my lucidcharts for 39, when The share price exploded funny that i must have gotten extremely lucky.
Unfortunately, i didn't quite get the 41 peak here, because i was busy selling my entire loser position on one of my other portfolios when it spiked by the time it came to this one. It was a few minutes late, but i'm pretty happy with it. Lucid went a heck of a lot higher all the way to 55 afterwards, but i collected my upside and sold when the shares hit my target price, which is the same thing i'll do every single time lucid, share price at the moment is 37.64 and i would Actually have done a lot better if i didn't sell, because the money i got from selling i put straight into palantir and fiverr, and both of those companies got completely smashed in november and december, and the last move i made here is i sold out of amd In this portfolio gradually and i've bought into pinterest uh a lot of using a lot of that money instead now i still hold some amd and some of my other portfolios, but in much reduced sizes. I've reduced my position down.

That's because i have a target price of 196 dollars for amd, and the share price was hovering in 150 260 range when i did it so the upside at that moment was only about 22 to 30 percent, and i had other stocks where i saw a considerably Larger potential upside, so i have gone and redistributed that's pretty much it. I made big gains on stocks like adobe, amd and lucid motors during the course of the year, and i exited those positions after collecting the money. I've also made a very big gain on tesla, but i am continuing to hold that position because i continue to see a large upside, but i have also taken a massive beating on fiverr, palantir and pinterest right at the end of the year and that's how we Got to our end of the year position with 75.8 up. So here is my plan with this portfolio for 2022.

I am very happy with the stocks i hold in here at the moment, and i have a three-digit upside potential on all of these stocks. In my models, so in theory for me, these could be multi-baggers. Next year, though, is very hard to predict. We have inflation, worries that we haven't seen for some time and rising interest rates that are going to come.

These are likely to be very painful for somebody with a lot of growth stocks in their portfolio. Like me, having said that, we already have swallowed a ton of the downside of that in the last two months on the share prices so maybe later on in the year, things are actually going to look a lot better. I'm also going to be adding a fifth position here in january, and i'm going through a few of my contenders on the shortlist at the moment for that spot i'll. Let the channel members and patreons know when i make that call and the discord as i make it before i go and do the buying and i'm going to share a video at some point after that.
When i make the move on the channel. But there is a risk that, because of the inflation, i will lose money or maybe even try sideways in this portfolio for the whole year. I don't think that will happen, but it is certainly possible - and this is where long-term thinking is going to be key. It's going to be critical.

I have been very active, as you just saw in this portfolio during the course of the year, but there is every chance that next year will be the exact opposite. If these stocks don't explode in value, forcing me to sell - and if i don't see much better opportunities emerging from somewhere else that i haven't seen yet there is absolutely every chance that i'll just sit there on these stocks for the whole year and do absolutely nothing Make sure you subscribe if you want to see what actually ends up happening? Hello Sasha, I am a 14 year old in the UK and I am looking to start investing. However, I am finding it quite difficult to find a good platform in the UK in which I can open a custodial account so that my parents can control the account. I was wondering if you could recommend and good platforms, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

SO you bought tesla and won. Everything else was either a loser or detractor from that. So, buy Tesla. Shut off your computer and go live your life.

My favourite stock pick for 2022 is GGPI Polestar EV stock which should double (at least) when the merger happens in the first half of 2022. I am long on GGPI, TSLA, LCID & CHPT.

Ok clickbait. Such a tiny portfolio you are risking nothing. So short term. I made 30% four times in 2021 actually was up 41+ in 6 months on much larger portfolio. That is just tiny play money, again do it with a few million or money you can live off of.

Ya ya…you are making a point but I am too. Lets put some actual money on the table. Returns on tiny money is basically useless

Good point!!! Starting early and prioritizing your investment is the best way of getting ahead to financial freedom. Iโ€™m 33 and my goal is to hit a million before eoy so I can retire 2022. Currently averaging over 20% monthly on my stock portfolio so I know I will get there. Time in the market beats anything else

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris Mills says:

Looking at various YouTube channels it seems easy to beat the market, just shove money into tesla.
What I like about your channel is that you are a champion for doing research and having an investment target. I am limited to UK stocks as I don't use the likes of etorro etc.,but I am inclined to think that even if you limited yourself and benchmarked against a ftse index, your grown up approach would serve you just as well.

It would be nice to see if you can do this for 5 years in a row or more, expecially during the bear market as it is easy to invest during bull market. Taking nothing away, still very impressive.

Thanks – very informative and Kudos on the performance of the portfolio. Haters gonna hate and will always pick on anything, except the facts!! The biggest fact being you made cold hard cash ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿ’ฐ !! Best of luck for 2022. Do you see MTTR or SE having a big upside for inclusion in this portfolio?

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars JamesL Dirkin says:

you saying you have a 75% return this year is absolute BS, you were in the market for the second half of the year and gained 35% meaning your ytd return is 35%, not 75%. If you had invested at the beginning of 2021 there is little chance you would be up 75%. You probably got in at a good time as the nasdaq and tech stocks sold off heavily in February/march times allowing you to come in at a nice price in may. Just because half of the indicies gains came before you invested in May doesnt mean you can assume that you wouldve gained 35% from that, unknown, stop saying you achieved 75% ARR.

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Turning Point says:

You did well. Only just over 50% up here altogether which honestly I'm more than happy with. My gambling account (only ~2% of my investments) hasn't had good returns (-1%) that I started about April this year and counter intuitively I see that as a good thing. Thats were I'm buying at the moment, mostly tech growth and will continue to buy as long as I see fit. So really I want those valuations to stay low for a few years then pick up. Did pick up some more Tesla the other week for $908, couldn't resist but expect this and a few other plays that are EV affected to be my main growth this coming year. Have plenty of Tesla so happy to see that gain price, although if it sat at a thousand it'd be a good lesson on what growth does to P/E ratio, some really need this lesson.
Let the game continue. And good luck to you all.

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars C S says:

Sasha how do you set your target price. Not going greedy or do you just have a set level at a point to buy and a point to sell.

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ilan Rozenberg says:

a little confusing when you say you loaded up massively on TSLA when in reality you bought less then 1 share…or am i missing something ๐Ÿค”

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris says:

The thumbnail pic shows โ€œ2021 Return: +75.4%โ€, implying that you made 75.4% gain in 2021. You should at least put โ€œannualisedโ€. Very misleading otherwise, as youโ€™re directly comparing a calendar year to 75.4%, which is not true.

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Deveon89 says:

VTI? What about the rest of the world (VXUS)? Usually US outperformance but thatโ€™s mainly tech driven. However, will it last?

Myself I rather pick my favorite US companies and spread to the rest of the world with VXUS, basically as alternative to cash for when great buying opportunities arrive.

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars L S says:

Using an annualised rate of return after spending 6 months (of 2021..) in the market as a gauge for investing success is something I wouldnโ€™t imagine someone as intelligent as you to do.

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars jcwat says:

Excellent returns but your buy/sell strategy within months would consider you a trader not investor in New Zealand's tax system, which means that for the rest of your life, if you invest in stocks you would have to pay unrealised capital gains tax as well as short term sell tax and if you invest over 50k NZD like me you would also add foreign investor tax. Something which I'm trying to avoid. If I followed your strategy I would be over 50% in the green this year but not accounting for all the tax liability

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars LondonNomad says:

You're my investing idol Sasha I was so sad when I saw AMD was at $156 I bought it at $85 then had to sell it for funds.

Working on an emergency fund before investing.

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Alex says:

Hi Sasha, I almost feel stupid questioning your methods – but I'll make the mistake anyway.

As you say yourself your aim is to be aggressive to outperform the market every year, but some of the big holdings you have left (PINS and FVRR especially) might take some time, potentially years, before their business strategy.. matures, for want of a better word. I'm sure you have mentioned this in your own videos.

If the headline figures in earning reports don't amaze, it seems unlikely that they will shoot towards your target price(s) this year (to me) – a catalyst is required. I'd say there's no guarantee of that in the next four quarters.

Sorry for the paragraphs, but if your target is just to get big % returns on a 12 month basis on this portfolio, maybe stocks with earlier catalysts would perform better? As you said yourself, there is risk of sideways movement.

    Hi sasha,
I think to move my account to etoro.
Is it really that cheap to invest with them?
Are there any brokerage feew, some correspondence fees that u pay?

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars eralec says:

Thanks for the video. Is your personal portfolio also visible somewhere? Not necessarily the dollar amount but the positions and percentage allocations. Or is it similar to this one?

looks like you preach one and do another you said buy for long term dont sell and you buy and sold every month also you sell the best stocks when they were skyrocketing and buy fbr and pinterest maaaaan :)))

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Omi t says:

Hi Sasha, first thanks for creating the videos, it helps noobs like me alot. I'm planning to invest in stock market particularly index funds soon however looking at the charts, market have had massive growth almost 30% in the last 21 months or so which scares me that whatever money I invest will probably result in a lose since a crash seems imminent. Even if there's no crash on horizon, I'm not sure if such growth can be expected in 2022 & 2023.

I've some cash lying around which I intend to invest however this fear is deterring me from getting into the market. I understand you're not a financial advisor but if you were to start investment today and considering the points I mentioned before, how much of your liquid/cash networth would you invest in stock market(stocks & index funds).

I'd really really appreciate your insights!
