So what’s the deal when a broker rejects a stock order? Here’s the first thing you know: some brokers don’t allow you to trade OTC stocks. These brokers tend to only allow trades on stocks that are listed on the big exchanges like the NYSE and Nasdaq.
Let’s say you’re checking out a five-digit ticker — like some sketchy weed stock — but your broker won't let you buy it. What do you do?
Contact customer service!
Ask if you can trade OTCs. Depending on the broker, you might just be able to fill out some paperwork, and boom, you can trade OTC stocks. But it really depends on the broker...
Some brokers are just too risk-averse. They don't want you to trade these speculative companies. And some of the more established brokerage houses may not let you trade some of these really volatile stocks.
If you're looking to trade low-priced stocks, this can be super frustrating!
You can also focus on price levels, whether it’s an OTC, Nasdaq, or NYSE. Some brokers just won't let you trade stocks under a certain price. Also, remember if you're trying to short these low-priced stocks, most brokers simply won't let you.
Are any of these scenarios tripping you up? You don’t have to suffer through it and skip trades. It just means it’s time to upgrade your broker. Be sure to do your research. Shop around and find a new broker that better suits all your trading needs.

Great video. Great info. Just a heads up, research is misspelled. 😜
I find the more legacy brokers let you trade OTC much more than all the new ones. (ex. Robinhood and Webull both don't allow OTC while TD does)
I got ahold of my joker, broker. They said I can trade otc stocks when they are available, no exact date. Thanks for the response, best of luck opening day, should be easy to track.
I will try to get ahold of my brokerage firm tommorow to see if they will let me trade otc, thanks for the hint.
🙂👍
Mr. Bohen, first off I would like to thank you for taking time out of your busy life, to give us the training videos. I started my stock market career last month. I have not traded yet, I have just been focusing on studying. I am currently going through your Stock Guide 101 playlist. My question is how and when do you pay taxes? All the videos of different “trainers” I have watched. I have yet to find anyone explaining it. I am sorry if you have covered this in a previous video.
Great Video
Thanks Tim
IB doesn’t allow me to trade COWPP when it was hot before the suspension… I have written with them and they said “… we just haven’t it available for trading, it’s not personally to you, but at all.” It was really annoying to watch it only how it runs multiple green days in a row and couldn’t be able to touch it….
ahhhh, 60fps.
Thanks, Tim! All I have is $100 now, do you recommend I start with it in a cash account trading OTC? The broker I am interested in using charges commissions for OTCs'. I be starting part-time job soon so I can add more to my account. What are your thoughts on proprietary trading firms?
Have you ever tried to buy a stock and gotten denied by your broker?
Thanks for the video Tim! This is a great little tip video for anyone whos new or doesnt have a brokerage account yet. Ill definitely be doing some more digging to find out what my best option would be for a small account.
