DoorDash didn't steal tips. Let me explain. I drive for DoorDash and I know how the old pay model and the new pay model work. What DoorDash did was take tips from one order and add money to another order in which the customer didn't tip so that a driver would take the offer and deliver the food. When cheap customers don't tip, drivers don't accept the offer for that delivery and that food never gets delivered or gets delivered extremely late. This angers the cheap customer (their own fault for not tipping) and the restaurants who wastes the food. With the new pay model customer tips are given 100% to the driver but this issue is a big problem of customers not tipping the delivery driver. DoorDash can't force customers to tip or customers will stop using DoorDash and start using Uber Eats or GrubHub as their preferred app. A way to fix this is to explain to customers that DoorDash hires independent contractors who don't get paid hourly and only get paid per delivery. They need to explain to the customer that DoorDash only offers the driver $3 to deliver their food and a tip is needed to make the offer desirable to the driver for their food to be delivered. Tony Xu doesn't want to do this either because then he appears cheap to customers. DoorDash also needs to implement a maximum deliver distance of no more than 10 or 12 miles away from the restaurant. Many offers are $3 to drive for 18 miles. That doesn't even cover the cost of gas and car repairs and the driver is losing money taking offers like that.

the government PDT rule doesn't apply to options. And once you break it, your dealing with the government you can't just reset it.
