So yesterday I put out a video talking about the Chase, Sapphire Reserve and updated perks that they made, I wouldn't even say updated. I would say more sort of a change. I'm not really happy with the changes that were made as well as a lot of you. Creating your comments and all that I've seen comments like Amex is now King, the City preferred card sounds like a better card.
I've been seeing a lot of comments, so this is simply a opinion. This is not anything that Chase has set out there mouth. This is my thoughts, and I know this is this is different, but what, if Chase, actually wanted that? What if this is what they wanted? Let's get right into the video, alright guys, so welcome back to the channel. I did it upon myself to do some more research to really figure out, but what was chase thinking about this and again, I'm not sure what their process is.
I'm not sure they're gon na give us more perks as time goes on and they want to give us more perks. Kind of like with the MX platinum, did with the sex with Avenue credit and all that stuff. But what were they thinking when it came to giving us a door credit for about two years and a lift pink voucher for a year? What were you thinking did they think this is gon na, be better no hotel status, no more points per dollar or certain categories? None of that just giving you some credits that don't even necessarily last for more than a year or two, so I decided to go on a couple of different websites. We're gon na put the links of these articles.
You can read them yourself and I thought to put two and two together again guys. This is just speculation, but wouldn't chase actually wanted this reevaluation for all of the card members, especially the credit card Turner's. So let's look at the first article, and this is I'm giving all credit to investopedia and I wanted to kind of read something I saw here. This is coming from Chase in December, so in December, I'm guessing in December of 2002 18, since this is one of 2019 Jason now said, as the profits for the fourth quarter would be lower than anticipated from 500 million and a 300 million owing to the rewards Program included with its coveted Chase Sapphire credit card, which has been available since mid 2016.
So now we see that Chase is coming down low at an anticipated, which you know what happens, and it's really coming from the rewards program. We know one of the bigger issues was to chase that fire reserve car, so that was the first auto car red and I was kind of like mmm, so now losing money. Okay got it. The second order car I went to was a article that I found on her wallet calm.
This came out a few months ago and it's kind of going over some of the things that Chase is actually cutting down on, so car holder was no longer. Cars were no longer earn points on purchases that qualified put a 300. I like Angela traffic credit, in other words, the cart. They give you three points for Donilon eligible travel purchases won't start earning that rate in that category, and so you spin 300. So when you get to that, rependa dollar credit you're not going to get three minute out of credit and then three points per dollar and Adric cutting that off to which was costing them money. Obviously, it's discontinuing the price protection perk, which refunds a portion of the purchase price of an item you brought if you find it advertised for less so and priority pass, is not limited to two. Previously, the car didn't set a limit and car hoarders were charged additional 27 per guest so and also one of the bigger ones, and I got I'm just reading from the website, as I couldn't you know, realize it from memory, but remember when it first came out. The sign up bonus was a hundred thousand ultimate world points, and I mean people were going.
Nuts people were going crazy and I'm sad, I didn't take up on the offer this. I was still a little new in the world of credit. The credit game and I didn't want to take on the 450 annual fee and not really - I didn't want to at 15. I wasn't really there yet mentally as where I am four years later.
When it comes to credit cards and things - and I didn't take up on an offer, but I mean people - they were going crazy. I mean a lot of these big YouTube channels really started to get big in 2016. When the chase tie fire Berserker come out when it when it came out, because that was most of their videos for the first couple of weeks or months, everybody want to know about it. Everybody want to know the the signup bonus and what you could do, and a lot of channels became really successful from that 2016 Shae Sapphire reserve.
A hundred thousand sign up online views were coming in left around on YouTube. Everybody's want crazy and that cause chase a lot of money so much that they had to for two things: one they had to stop. They didn't have any more metal cards. You can only get plastic Chase Sapphire cards for a little bit.
I'm not sure to remember that, and also they cut the annual from 100 and sorry, not the annual fee. They cut the solid I borders from a hundred thousand to fifty thousand, so it was costing. The reason I did that was it was cost of it was costing the bank so much money to give everybody. You know these a hundred thousand Ottoman rule points and that's it and also a lot of people were turning right and then this is when cheese comes out with the 5:24 rule and like what you can't get this car with us.
If you've gotten five cards in the last 24 months, because people were turning these credit cards, they were getting these perks. They were getting you signup bonuses, they were closing them and, let's be real banks with credit cards, make money a few different ways. One way when you swipe the card, they get a percentage of that and also people who don't pay the balance and fool. Well, YouTube is using everybody.
Listen you pay what you're gon na pay you pay it off and fool. Leave it alone right, so they're not making money off of interest from a lot of people that way people are closing these cards. Getting a signup bonus, not get anything in return, losing the customers that way, just so many different things. So my theory with this is what, if Chase, wanted their Turner's that were maybe looking to charm you, but what if this was just one again, this is just pure speculation. I'm really thinking about it. What if this is something that they maybe wanted. What if this is something they they were looking forward to doing you know people who are turning don't want to spend an extra five. Fifty you know when they see the benefits, cost effective and people who have the card, for you know, maybe not so good reasons or maybe just have the car just because maybe the travel credit or whatever maybe like they want really loyal customers.
Maybe they want to really focus on not just the rewards but also having other products with them: mortgages savings accounts, checking, accounts etc, having a formal relationship as opposed to just the credit card, I'm not sure, but I was just really sitting here thinking and I'm like You know why on earth would I chase to give these extra? I haven't really seen anybody so far. I was extremely happy with the upgrade, so I'm going to try to figure out. Why would they make these changes and I was like well. This is another thing that they wanted.
They want people who are not really interested for chase within the best interests of Chase. Don't want the car that what if you know me, for example, I'm just coming to get to sapphire reserve cards that I looked at was a signup bonus and that's pretty much it and I'm gon na pay. You know 450 and get the sauna bonus and you know I'm gon na get. You know my value.
Obviously cuz, I'm getting the fifty thousand. You know awesome or world points on a bonus, I'm giving you four or fifty, but should give me three hundred back. So I'm really only paying 150 and I'm getting a lot more value. So yeah, I'm giving you four or fifty but you're, giving me three hundred dollars back plus the signup bonus and then, after that, maybe after the first year I closed a car.
I don't want it anymore, so a lot of things like that and then again the biggest one I was like whoa when they stopped giving everybody points on the three hundred dollar credit, and so after so again you don't get three points per dollar on the Travel Category until you've actually capped off and you spent you three hundred, so I don't want to give you a credit and make points off of the credit that are given to you. So it's a lot of cutbacks that these banks are doing and again what do you guys think about the video? This was just in my mind, I'm just like we'll use having to figure out. Why would they do that, and this is what I came up with, but let me know what you guys think about it again. If you have any comments questions you think this is a good video, a bad video. I don't care and let me know what you think I wanted to kind of share my thoughts with you like. I always do and get your opinion on how I feel about it, and maybe the thoughts are in my head and what's in yours, so make sure you like share subscribe. If you found this video helpful, maybe a different video rather than just going over the you know thousands of videos that we've seen the past two days, we're all talking about the perks because we are says be real. We want that.
We want the other views. We want our, you know, people to be kind of be you know interacting with us, and we want to get the information out as quickly as possible to help us out too, and also give you guys information. I want it to be a little different today with it still talked about the product, obviously because it is still fresh but kind of think outside the box and trying to figure out why Chase is doing it. So we found a video helpful.
Let me know make sure you like and subscribe, and I've seen another video take care.
Chase needs to add at least 1 hotel status program to the CSR. Perhaps they could add Marriott Gold or Hyatt Discoverist, since they have relationships with those brands. That would make it a knockout against the AMEX Platinum.
Chase trimming the fat
The altitude reserve is looking good right about now.
No i think its just a lousy business decision.
totally agreed with you .. i was planing to get this card and i don't mind $550 but i was hoping for better multipliers i was hoping for 5X on Travel and 5X for Worldwide restaurants
Well in spring I was thinking of applying for the reserve but now I may just go for Amex.
Great video as always. To me it destroys all value in the trifecta. I’m am more than just a credit card customer of Chase. This is a kick in the teeth for years of loyalty. I’m not looking at this as just another 100 this years but 20 years down the road which would be 2000 assuming it doesn’t keep going up which I’m sure it will.
I believe as soon as amex hikes their af. Chase was going to do it. I have both amex plat and CSR . I guess one of then has to go. Have alot to think about now
I think you are right they are trying to do this to minimize churners. Also I think they are trying to target a specific demographic like those in big cities that will use Lyft and Door Dash too so basically to attract and retain a certain demographic is also what I am thinking.
I wouldnt say Amex is the King for now. what happens if you weren’t able to transfer the points to anywhere you want, and would have to use a travel portal? Chase still 1/2 step ahead on that note.
The $450 annual fee was already a loss leader. The benefits were too good to sustain that low annual fee, so it was inevitable that the annual fee was going to get raised.
Interesting perspective Walt and you are probably not too far off in your thinking.
The bonus from initial launch is probably still killing their bottom line…financial cancer if you will. When Amex and even Citi up’s their game (i.e. Amex Gold card, Citi Prestige 5x categories) it took a lot of wind out of their sail. Now Amex dabbling in travel protection has become more of an allure to some (not myself) but all of that to say this…they aren’t the dog with the biggest bark anymore. Competition is good, great even, for consumers. But they had to stop the bleeding an try to get back some of the loss. Best way, increase the annual fee. Place limits on some benefits.
Did you ever think why the CSR and the Ritz Carlton are both Visa Infinite cards but the CSR doesn’t get the unlimited $100 domestic RT airfare discount like the Ritz. They can’t even remotely conceive adding that benefit because the card is already costing them.
Chase thought Citi and Amex would remain stagnant and it didn’t happen. I have Chase and Amex. The Amex Platinum just isn’t one that works for me, I’ll stick with the CSR and my Ritz. The 3 reasons I will never get the Amex Platinum is their weird language surrounding RT travel protection. $175 is just too damn much for my wife to be an authorized user. And lastly I HATE the limited use of the travel credit. One, I’m locked in to a specific airline for a year and 2 it doesn’t cover anything that most of us don’t get with our airline cards. Because who in this game hasn’t churned the miles from their preferred airline card…thus meaning none of us will probably ever have a checked bag fee.
End of my typical rant about this particular subject. See you at the next one.
Although I am not in the Chase ecosystem, interesting argument, good perspective.
Be interesting if Amex came to the table and started offering 100K sign-up bonus for the Platinum to persuade those on the fence to jump ship. Or, Amex may say … keep current sign-up bonus as is since it appears many are unhappy and we may simply get people to sign-up due to them being unhappy.
It’s clearly a business decision by Chase, they were losing 💰
