Traditionally, traders buy a small portion of a company with anticipation that the business will improve, the value of the company will increase, and their shares will go up in value.
Short selling works differently - you simply reverse that process. Traders sell first, buy back later, and collect the premium.
A sympathy play is one strategy that is good for short selling. This occurs when momentum stocks move too far, too fast on very suspect news. Sometimes these stocks spike only because another stock is moving.
Pump and dumps are great shorts because the price goes straight up and then comes back down. In a profitable short selling scenario, you would buy it back at a lower price when it collapses, and collect the difference.
Shorting is a great method of trading, but you have to be very selective and cautious. Dig into the fundamentals, research the stock and be sure you're entering at the right time because there is an unlimited loss potential with shorting.

I shorted plug and learning where to put a stop SPY was down so it was a good time I learn a lot from Tim and stock to trade team the the best in the business to me there not just sailing you something they are teaching you a lot .

When you buy stock you can hold on to it forever to see if it will go up to take your profit. Does same rules apply to shorting a stock ? Because what goes up will eventually come down or when you short a stock is there a time frame? I new at the short selling concept so any information would help.

I've shorted many times, it's a great tool. Though if someone isn't good about sticking to stops they should not do it, stocks do go up believe it or not, especially when everyone is shorting.
