As a trader, it’s essential for you to create a list of stocks to watch and potentially trade. So how do you get down to just one or two stocks for potential trading … especially when there are so many stocks out there?
Take it step by step.
Start with basic criteria. Does the stock have volume and volatility? Is it a former runner? There aren’t a ton of former runners spiking with volume every day. That’s OK. Sometimes the best trade is no trade. So if you don’t find any stocks matching that criteria, walk away. Maybe use that time to study instead.
You can also look at your watchlist from the previous days or even weeks. If these stocks hold the trend and the volume comes back, they can be worth tracking.
Look for the big percent gainers every morning. That will usually give you a few select stocks to watch most days. But remember, sometimes there are no stocks on that list.
Don’t be fooled by all the marketing and hype… you don’t need to trade every single day.
What do we mean by hype? Twitter’s a good example here. It can be great for stock market research, but it’s also very easy to fall for the hype. It can turn your few picks into 500 super fast … We call this ticker spamming.
If you don’t know what you’re looking for, it might be better to avoid using it as a resource.
Cutting through the noise is a challenge, but it’s possible. It’s all about repetition and refining. You’re human. You will make mistakes. But you have to learn to check your emotions. If you let your emotions run wild, you can quickly lose track of your trade plans and goals.
Follow the price action and let the chips fall where they may.
It takes a lot of time, practice, and persistence, but it can get easier with time and experience.
