Wanted to share this story, find it fascinating.

So as someone up and coming from the hood, I and a handful of others decided along the way to oppose the violence, poverty and overall hopelessness of the area. (Yet to publicly disclose all details, will in due time) Imagine regular drive bys, narrowly escaping death, schools in probation, death threats, familial homicide, unemployment and closely tied rampant drug abuse.

Now the community’s in decent shape with the contribution of locals over the past 2 decades. Crowd I rolled with getting those schools to exemplary status per Chicago standards. Lot of us in that group 1st gen college students (full ride or tuition), military or working class now. Kids there now provided options to make money legitimately, going young into drug dealing to get by no longer being a thing. Still hashing out the crime bit, at least some progress with no more drive bys.

How this ties to credit cards. Well lingering from my upbringing was a trauma with credit. Loan sharks, predatory loans and credit defaults having been huge where I lived. Seeing so many taken down with debt, I in essence grew a distrust of owing people anything.

Group I roll with as a whole are about that of building wealth. Is the case that we had never before met someone build a good credit score and benefit from proper use. Nor an investment portfolio, streams of income or even successful (legal) business. In many ways were guinea pigs learning by doing.

As for me, it took years of one of my mentors (keeping anonymous) prodding, watching folks like Brian Jung, Graham Stephan, Jeremy from F.E. and many more before I had the guts to try this out.

On a technical level was easy, transforming my mentality was the hard part. Can include mental fortitude tho that got developed through years prior being a practitioner of wrestling, stock picking and more (still to date).

Arround start of 2020 under supervision of my mentor, applied for the discover it card. Got it, $1,500 limit, flipped my lid after mentor explained the odds of this. Some 3 months passed before applying for the next one. All the while paying in full end of each mo., started ~660s.

Ended up applying to 3 others that were all starter cards. Rejected each time, went on a hiatus. All the while paying regularly and score growing.

Some months after that, having started a savings account with Amex (eyeing that long term trifecta) noticed a tab in the account leading to credit card offers. Was curious so clicked. Low and behold, preaproved for the gold.

Shook, discussed this with my mentor, mulled over worth or not at that point along with other cards. Decided to go for it in roughly a week time to let emotions run their course.

Day came, sat down, filled out the application. Household income, you know the gyst if following Brian Jung 😉 Hit submit, in what felt like an eternity (minutes really) got back an acceptance.

One of the top adrenaline rush moments of my life.

Once off the adrenaline rush, in a “fuck it” moment decided to also apply to the Apple credit card. Mentor was supportive. Few minutes later hit submit and voila, for 3k.

I offered to have first thing on those cards be whatever they like (within reason). Mentor reproached that no, being able to guide me past their own short comings was enough for them. Mind you had gone through online business ventures, gone in discourse of stock picking, geopolitics and cooking together. Am blessed to have met them in life.

So now I find myself having jumped into the credit card game through Discover, and months later be with an 🍎 card and Amex gold card.

Factors that I see could’ve played a role too being an Amex bank account, monthly deposits to it, ~$30k stock portfolio at the time (started with $1k), 0 student debt, ‘house hacking’, fico score in the low 700s and well still having a job despite this recession.

In hindsight could’ve started years ago, didn’t know any better, oh well. Point is that even for those of us born into a fucked up upbringing, there’s still a chance at making it in life.

Still ever a student and ever a practitioner. Trying to right the wrongs of this society I was born into with the help of those arround me.

If you made it this far, thanks 😊 , may you have a meaningful life!

I had a similar story but instead of Netflix it was audible. Somehow Amazon must have tricked me into clicking on a free trial or something and then later charged me for it. Amex took care of it for me and I didn't have to deal with Amazon.

    roadside assistance

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Allan Curtis says:

Why a receipt when it's shown in your transactions?

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tom Rockefeller says:

In my opinion, you are miscalculating the break even point. My American Express Blue Cash already gives me 3% back on groceries with no fee. The break even point for this card should be based on the extra 1% on groceries, not the full 4%. For a $95.00 annual Fee, American Express Cash Preferred offers 6% on groceries. So it's hard for me to see this card making sense from a grocery standpoint. I do enjoy your videos, though!
