Intro Song: Music by Eric Reprid - Basement - https://thmatc.co/?l=15C8473B
Told my brothers one day we gon make it people's playlists. So one day i be stomping on stages, but right now we just dancing in the basement right inside the basement, set this for it and still wait. Wait. We tweaking bases learning ourselves on my own time.
I made shifts shooting for them. I'm gon na turn this honda to a spaceship show they won't fall with me. I just wan na get some rain and sleep shitload free yeah. So what i don't want, then i get what i want.
It's too easy baby. You normally, i yo what is going on. You guys welcome back to another video, so i got a pretty interesting episode in today's video. We actually got all my credit cards lined up against me behind on the whiteboard.
This is gon na be pretty interesting because i'm gon na go over exactly which credit cards i got my sequence of how i applied for these credit cards, some of the mistakes i made and some of the things i wish. I did differently and also i'm gon na add in a credit card i'm about to apply for in the future. Definitely the first time we're doing this type of video, but this is something i wanted to do for quite a while - and i know on this channel that we have a wide range of credit card users. So we have consumers that go from all the way to the beginner, where they don't even have their first credit card to people who are just in their 10th year of doing credit cards and being in the points of miles game.
So i feel like this. Video is really going to benefit everyone, who's able to watch this, and i think this video is really going to be able to provide you guys value in terms of some of the mistakes i made and what i'm gon na do in terms of the future moves That we have so behind me. These are the credit cards that i have. I hope you guys can see it pretty well uh, if not i'll, add some b-rollers something, but this is my credit card setup that i have right here.
It took me like 30 minutes to like tape everything on this, so if you guys appreciate the hard work and the arts and crafts out here, i suggest you drop a like now, as you guys may see, we have a missing slot right here. This is the next credit card that i'm gon na get a lot of people. Keep asking me what credit card am i going for next? What credit cards am i downgrading so we're gon na go over that right here and then in this little corner right here we got our two plebs and right here is actually two debit cards. I'm gon na go over exactly why i use these two debit cards over any other checking accounts out there, one sequence now, the card after that that i have is actually the uber visa barclays card.
The card right here, you guys see, used to be so good back in the day. This was one of the most low-key best cash back credit cards on the market, but they actually nerfed. This card got rid of the benefits. It's not as good as it was before, and they changed the cashback categories and how you can actually redeem those points.
So this was my second card, but it was really good because it actually came with a welcome bonus that wasn't too crazy, where i could actually achieve that bonus, i think, would spend like a thousand dollars or spent 500. It just wasn't as crazy as as something like the american express business platinum card where you have to spend a total of 25 000 in three months to get that welcome bonus. We will get there, we will get there, so you guys will actually see a a transition of kind of just me as a person as well with my cards, which is really interesting, because when i first got my discover card broke college student, i didn't even i I don't even think i was in business during that time. I don't think i started anything during this time, but i got the uber barclays card next. I was actually watching a lot of youtube videos. I was always on the reddit communities and i just wanted to get into credit cards because i never wanted to pay for travel, and i understood the concept of getting into credit cards, but don't get me wrong, you guys i had so much push yo. Why is my nipple poking through my shirt, my nipples poking through, but don't get me wrong? You guys. I had so much pushback from my parents when i actually first applied for two of these cards.
You got you got to know. You know i'm coming from a first generation korean american household. There was a lot of pushback in me wanting to get a credit card. While i was a college student without making too much money, so i eventually was able to convince people that look, i'm i'm starting to grow up now, i'm able to apply for my own cards.
I want this card, i know the benefit and i know i'll pay. It off in full, never did i come across a situation with my beginner cards, where i couldn't pay off the balance. I was very responsible in terms of how much i spent, and i remember there were so many times where i would go out to eat with friends and i'd just be like i can't like i, i can't i can't i can't afford to eat out right now. I got a budget, i got no money, so i had no shame in doing that back in the day and i also knew the power of credit cards so with just these two credit cards.
I accumulated right about 500 to 600 in terms of just cash back. Rewards referral friend programs the welcome bonus, maybe even more than that. Actually, looking back and with my discover card, i actually redeemed all the cash back for like gifts i would buy on amazon, so i would actually buy the gift and then apply my cash back towards the balance i had so it felt like. I didn't really pay anything just because it was free money that was loaded up here with the uber visa barclays card.
What i actually did with that was redeem it for gift cards, really easy gift, and you could really just redeem all those gift cards for you to get more gifts for other people. That's how i like using my cashback that i get when it comes to points. I like redeeming it for travel, that's how you get the best value and i still knew that at a very young age. I just didn't know what everything meant like 5, 24 rule and trifecta's quad fact does that that was a little confusing to me during this time of my life, but i would say around this time it was like 2018. I think i was like 19 or 20 years old uh during that time. Is that right was it 2017? My math is a little wrong. The next card i got after that was a chase freedom unlimited card. Now people often question this gap right here.
They don't know exactly how to get a first chase card, and i know a lot of people do get denied for their first chase card as well too. For me, i kept these cards for about three to six months and really built my score. I really built my score after three to six months of carrying this card. My score went from non-existent, whatever i think was like 680.
When i first started out, i just had no credit cards and it bumped up to right around 700 and during that time, that's when i actually applied for the freedom unlimited card - and i know there are other people who get accepted with a score much lower than That so your miles may vary. I tell my audience look. It really depends on the time of year what the issuers are looking for, because sometimes during the year they want more people to apply, and sometimes they actually don't they're actually going to deny a lot of users. I got lucky with my first chase freedom unlimited card after holding these two cards.
These two cards up here actually gave me the history on my credit report, which allowed me to get accepted for the freedom unlimited now. The hardest thing with chase is getting that initial. First card, but once you do once you get that first initial card with them, you're gucci, you're, good, second card third card right after the freedom unlimited, i actually got the chase, sapphire preferred. So i did regret one thing with the chase: freedom unlimited.
I wish i actually got the regular chase freedom instead, just because i realized how valuable the 5 would be compared to that 1.5 x back. But during that time i really had a lot of miscellaneous spending. It was a lot of just college stuff and i figured that i wouldn't be able to maximize it as much, but looking back, i also made a video on this. The five percent, in my opinion, is superior, especially if you can take advantage of that rotating quarterly category.
So that's something i wish i did okay. So after holding this card for a couple months, the card i applied for next was actually the chase sapphire preferred. I'm gon na put a little star here, because this was actually one of my favorite cards and this card gave me the most amount of anxiety because it was my first annual fee travel rewards card and it's not fully metal. But it's it's like thicker than plastic.
It's like half metal okay, so this is a card that i really really appreciated. This really opened the door for me to get into the ultimate reward program, really get into the points game and really start falling in love with the whole credit card hobby. I had no idea what it started, but i feel like for a lot of people. This is the turning card. The chase sapphire preferred now. I know a lot of people will either go for the chase. Sapphire preferred or they'll go for the reserve. Now, if you're a big stay there now, i know if you're like a big baller and you're you're, someone who likes to travel people will go straight for the reserve instead.
But, like i said during that time, i was still a college student, not making a lot of money and i could not afford the 495 annual fee during that time. The annual fee got bumped up this year, as most of you guys know, but that's what a lot of people do and the reason why i would say this is more of a baller card. It's because it is an upgraded version of the preferred. It comes with a higher annual fee and a higher credit limit.
If you get accepted for the reserve. The minimum credit limit on this card is 10 grand. So you have to put that into perspective when you're trying to understand exactly how much this card is worth. So i made the wiser decision.
I believe this is the decision. A lot of people should make go for the chase, sapphire preferred because you get the same exact. Welcome bonus that you do for the reserve, unless you really travel that much and you know you're going to come out on top with the value you can get from this card, it's a little bit harder to break even on this card. You have to do a little bit more work now, just because they added those additional benefits that you have to use properly, but i recommend going for the preferred and then upgrading your card to the reserve and you can only hold one card at the same time.
So what you guys can actually do is downgrade the chase app. I prefer so that's what i did i downgraded my chase sapphire preferred at one point to the regular chase sapphire and this has no annual fee and then i downgraded it again to the freedom and we'll get into that. But before i show you guys my transition, these were my three staple cards right here. These were my three business credit cards and i really started to apply for these three business credit cards.
When i was running my drop shipping business when i was getting into amazon fba when i was really learning the high ropes of business and here's one thing, i leveraged a lot on my credit cards. This card came with a 12 month, no apr promotion so because it's a business credit card, you get a way higher credit limit. I had a credit limit of 25k. I leveraged that to fund a lot of the inventory.
I got some of the ads. I was running and when you guys get into business, especially ecommerce you'll realize there is a turnaround time in terms of the payments you receive when paypal holds your money or paypal processes, your money, you have to pay for ads and then you have to pay for The fees and then sometimes it takes even longer for shopify payments to come in so there's a turnaround time and when you're working with not much capital and you're using your student loans to fund your business venture. A card like this is something that actually saved me. A lot so the chase inc cash was one of my favorite cards out there. It has really good categories for anyone interested in business, but i know the biggest question i'm gon na get is well brian. I don't qualify for a business card. I don't have a business and let me stop you guys right. There just youtube a business credit card and you guys will see my videos on how to actually get a business credit card.
It's a lot easier than you think, and i was able to get one at the age of i think 20 21 years old, and i got all three of them and what people don't realize is business credit cards. Not only do they offer a higher credit limit, a higher welcome bonus, really good cash back categories in terms of business spend, but the main important and amazing advantage of business credit cards is that it does not report to your personal credit report. So what this means is, if you carry any type of credit card debt and you put it on a business credit card with no apr. That means this debt is not going to report to your personal credit report.
It will not lower your score and you have no apr on it, so you use a card like this to fund, whatever business venture that you may have now, if i were to put my debt on the freedom unlimited. First of all, this card has a tenth of the credit limit of what this card would have, and that is not good. I would not be able to fund my business ventures properly. I know i would max that out, but because this is a personal credit card, i know that will actually affect my personal credit score and it will take my score because my utilization goes up.
So that's a huge thing. You guys need to understand you can leverage these cards, but one of the best things that i got from these cards is the points. I got a lot of points because this card offers you 500 aka. 50.
000 points. 80. 000. Points.
50. 000 points. So that's about 180 000 points, not even taking why what what please stick? Ah, all right, sorry, my my gold card keeps falling. So where were we, these three cards is a combination of two hundred thousand ultimate reward points.
If we're talking about a one cent, a one point valuation, that's still two grand right there free two thousand dollars, but as you guys know, you can get way more value. You can get up to two to five, even eight cents per valuation, depending on how you redeem those points, i would say, eight cents is pretty far-fetched, but some of the pros that i know in this game could get a lot of value for me personally, i'm Gon na say chase ultimate reward points are worth two cents per point. So two hundred thousand points plus right here. We just we'll just say two hundred thousand just to be very conservative. That's four thousand dollars right there that i can use for travel and just just use it for whatever i need. So for me, the whole point of credit cards is to leverage whatever business i'm trying to do whatever side hustle, i'm trying to start. You don't use credit cards primarily as a source of income. That's really not the way you want to go about it.
You want to leverage this for any venture. You have whether you want to start your own personal brand, whether you want to start a blog, your own youtube channel, your own e-commerce business. You want to get into real estate look into credit cards to leverage that, but don't use it as a primary source of income. It just doesn't work that way.
I plan to use my credit cards to receive the points to use the benefits, to use the statuses in order for me to experience luxury travel that i wouldn't pay for normally and to really accumulate enough points, so i don't ever have to pay for travel again. I think that's one of the most important things out here, because everyone wants to travel, everyone needs to travel and there are different times when you want to travel versus. You need to travel in case of family emergencies, and things like that, and just knowing that you have the points to back that up is a huge, huge blessing. So i think you should really take advantage of this.
You don't have to go exactly the same route that i'm going, but once you really understand exactly how to leverage credit cards properly, you start to realize that these cards aren't just bad. It's not what dave ramsey says: it's not credit cards are evil they're going to destroy you. It's not like that at all. If you know how credit cards work, if you're responsible and you pay it off in time, you can actually find yourself making a lot of money and that's really what the whole point and miles hobby is about it's about leveraging.
Your personal finance accumulating more points that you can use towards travel and just just it's just free money, that's the easiest way to put it just free money. So we mentioned earlier how i went from the chase sapphire preferred over to the chase sapphire and then leveraged that into the chase freedom, um yeah. I the reason why i went from chase sapp i preferred to the sapphire is strictly for content. I wanted to make a video on, like the secret chase, sapphire card that no one knows about because this card's actually not listed on their website.
The only way for you guys to actually get this card is, if you call them and downgrade this card to this card, and then they have to read you a whole thing. You got to be on the phone for like 10 minutes, because there's no other way for you to get that information, because it's not listed on their website, so the chase sapphire non-preferred, the regular preferred, has no annual fee. It doesn't have the same exact benefits, but it's a way for you to downgrade your card. I don't see the purpose in this, i say: go to the chase, sapphire preferred and then go straight into the chase. Freedom or the freedom. Unlimited just carry another one of these, i would say, carry another freedom, so you can max out those quarterly categories and have another card because they capped that out at a certain point and you guys know come on mate. Ah, let's come on okay and, as you guys know, the five percent on a chase freedom card. Man, that's valuable.
Five percent is what you want to shoot, for you often don't find yourself getting five percent back on a lot of things max. I would say three to four percent, but five percent is really gold. If you can find yourself getting that back, it's a lot of bread, a lot of cheddar. So after my whole little chase experience and you know, diving deep into chase and having a good relationship with chase - and just you know this is, i would say this is the honeymoon phase with chase.
I wanted to explore a little. I wanted to test different grounds and that's when i got into the american express gold card and you guys will actually find my original video of my unboxing of when i first started this channel on this card. It was such a sloppy video. I'm super embarrassed by that video, but the american express gold card was the most exciting card other than the chase staff.
I prefer they're, they go hand in hand like i i felt like i was actually someone who i don't know i just i just felt good man getting this card was like a game changer for me, so with the american express gold card, in addition to it, Just being a good overall spending card - and i made a video on how this card only cost - you 30 a year - is just a solid card to have you guys, it gets you in the american express ecosystem and, most importantly, it started to diversify my portfolio, because, If chase, for whatever reason - and you guys will learn, this chase is very sensitive to fraud, to just anything weird happening to your account, you do not want to put your eggs in one basket if chase decides to close my account, for whatever reason, i know that I have half of my other million points with american express, so the american express gold card. It's an incredible card. It's one of my favorite cards that i got into and it shares the same exact feeling that i got with the chase. Sapphire preferred when i got it in the mail i was excited, it was nice.
People in my family were like yo, we've been poor, our whole life and our son has gotten an american express gold card. This is game, changing we're rich. Now my family was celebrating. I was celebrating, we all know. That's you know that that's not what it means, but when you come from a poor family like you realize like that, that's cool right there, man, okay, so the card after i got the american express gold card. Is the american express business prime card? This is the card that i use the most out of all these cards right here i would say it goes hand in hand. I shop on amazon a lot and if you guys actually get the amazon business prime account, you get free one-day shipping and you get free business listing prices and you get a whole bunch of other like business, quantity, pricing and like all these things. So i find myself shopping on amazon a lot in my unit downstairs.
We have an amazon locker, so it works really well, but amazon is where i get everything my kitchen stuff, my cleaning stuff, my gaming stuff, my books. They have everything i need so amazon business. Prime, i freaking love it with this card. You get five percent or if you cannot afford the item for whatever reason for that month, you can choose a interest-free three-month payment plan where you don't have to pay for that item for a full three months, and there are certain situations, especially with business owners where That will become very helpful.
I just take advantage of the five percent okay, it's because if you don't do the five percent you go with that you're, not getting the five percent. So this is a solid card, the business prime solid card, and for me it has no annual fee because i know i'm paying for the business prime account anyways. This is something i use a lot, especially when i was starting my e-commerce business amazon. Just has a lot of the tools that i needed and it's something i still use every day, very, very good card, so the card after that was actually the marry up on boy business card.
The reason why i got this card next is because they actually had a very good promotion when they actually merged with svg, so spg and marriott used to be separate. They did something called mergers acquisition where they basically united into one program, and that is called the bon voy program. Now, i'm not gon na lie. We've crapped on bon voy a couple times and that's because, as a program since they've merged with spg i've only heard i've heard a lot of bad things.
You know i've heard a lot of people not getting the service that they used to get or not getting treated the way they should or not. You know not getting the upgrades that maybe they should have qualified, for these are the things i see in facebook communities and even on bonvoid.com, where you can actually check other people's stories. For me, regardless of what all that talk was, i still ended up getting this card for a variety of reasons. One was they had a new welcome bonus offer during the time when i actually applied for this card. They actually had a high welcome bonus, historic high on this card, even though those points aren't worth as much. It was still one of the most historic high cards it still gave me status. I didn't know i was going to get the platinum cards which also give me marriott gold and in addition to that, they actually weigh the first year annual fee and they reduce the second year annual fee. So to me, it's a no-brainer because you still get a free night with bon boy.
It just worked out for me that that's the math that worked for me, so this was my first hotel credit card right here now now, moving over to this side, we actually have the american express platinum card. This was a card that i waited a long time. So in between this time i would say i waited about six months and i was holding off all the spend i needed to do like anything i knew i was gon na have to buy. I held off because i knew i was gon na have to spend a lot on the platinum card in order to get this welcome bonus because these cards have normal.
You know welcome bonus, like minimum spend requirements where you spend like 3k or 5k, but i knew as soon as i was getting into the platinum cards i'll do you just have to spend a lot more money to get that welcome bonus, and i never want to Be in a situation where i have to spend more money than i don't need to so i held off for like six months. I had everything in my cart during that time and then i i really just put a lot of my spent on these two cards during that time started running a bit more ads reached out to other companies to see if i can run ads on their behalf And have them reimburse me that was just an easy way for me to get that minimum spend requirement on both of the platinum cards now for this card i had an offer of 5k, for i think it was 60 000 points. I know it's not the most historic high in terms of how much i can get. I know if you do a card match and i have a link for that down below and that reminds me.
I have a link for every single card down below. If you guys want to support the channel, but i knew that i could also get the 100k offer, but i wasn't seeing it i wasn't getting the card offer, i wasn't getting the invitation or the direct mail offer from american express and i to me you know An additional 40 000 points is worth a lot, but i really have a long-term strategy. It's worth a lot, but to me i'm just going to apply for the card. Do my thing and just keep moving on.
I don't care if i don't get that additional 10. 20. 30. 40.
000. Welcome bonus points as long as i know what my long-term strategy is, because if i keep waiting for that say i don't get it for another year say i just missed out on all the other cards i could have applied for. That's really. My logic behind it, if i don't see it at the time when i'm gon na apply, i'm just gon na keep moving forward and go with my original strategy. I got this offer. I did not plan on getting the business platinum card. This card has a ridiculously high minimum spend requirement. I think it's like 25k for you to get the full amount in three months.
American express actually called me. A senior account manager called me and they gave me a reduced minimum spend requirement. I think it was like 10k or maybe 15k. It was reduced and i still got my full 100 000 points.
Huge lesson right here. That's why i got this card. I also get the dell credit. So with that i bought my samsung solid state drive.
I was about to buy another monitor on there and then i have access to any weworks globally for a pretty good amount of time. So i got the points i got the benefits, i got the dell credit and i got wework and i'm probably gon na downgrade this card after the year, because i definitely don't need two of these cards not worth paying about a thousand dollars an annual fee. For two versions of a similar card - so that's really my logic and reasoning behind those cards now the most recent card i had was the world high card. This was a video that i made unboxing and talking about this, but it kind of tanked.
It didn't do as well as i thought it would do surprisingly, but the world high card is a great car just because hyatt is personally one of my favorite hotel brands to stay with. I know everyone has their own personal preference in terms of which hotel brand that they like for me heights always been so good to me. Upgrades chocolates champagne like like they hyatt has just never. Let me down they've, just always been so good to me and it's just it's dependent on personal preference, how many hotels, you're gon na stay at which brand your company may be forcing you to stay at for me, i really like hyatt.
That's the reason why i got this card now. The next card, i'm gon na get a lot of people, keep asking me. It's probably gon na be another hotel card or i'm gon na get into the airline cards. Now, because i'm based out of the maryland area, we have a hub for southwest, they have a good relationship and we have really cheap domestic flights with southwest.
I think southwest is personally one of my favorite carriers out here. It's always cheaper. I would say about 50, less than delta or american, when i'm flying out domestically from my area and what i realized is southwest has not only personal credit cards but even business credit cards that offer you special things like a companion pass. So if i'm trying to bring a friend out to a trip - and we want to fly domestically, that companion pass, will allow them to travel with me completely for free as well.
I just want to time it right where i actually do fly that year. I'm planning on being more bunker down this year, focus on making more content focus on building some more businesses during this year, but last year i said i wasn't going to travel that much, but once i got my platinum and my business final card, that's when i Realized like man i got to make use of this. I got to get some more content out here and that's why i went to texas to speak at an event. I went to vegas to use that 50 bellagio hack that we had earlier on in the year where the rooms were freaking 50. We went to la after that because we were at vegas anyways, philly, new york and miami, so yeah there yeah. There were a couple trips we did last year. I don't plan on flying as much unless it's another event where someone's like hey, like brian, like come through, like we want you to speak, got a couple of those invitations already, but what i'm realizing is. If i can speak to, like thousands and thousands of people like at the comfort of my own home, i feel like this is still as impactful and influential as me doing that.
So it's really a consideration for me, but there is one thing i will be going to at the end of the year and that's actually going to be fincon 2020, which is held in la for anyone interested in attending a personal finance conference. That's where i met a lot of my friends that i have this year, so that's one of the trips that i'm actually looking forward to, but guys this is brian jones credit cards for 2020.. So there's two more things that we need to cover in this video. What card am i getting next and what would i change in my setup that i did in the past the card i'm planning on getting next, probably the southwest card, or maybe the hilton aspire card.
It's gon na force me to travel a little bit more this year, but that is what's on my radar. If i don't get any one of those cards, i'm actually gon na go for another ink business preferred unlimited or cash. I might actually get two more of these cards and the reason why you can do that is. I just started another llc for another business, so that actually gives me another ein.
So, instead of having my ink business cards for that original business, i've had since 2008, which i'm selling right now i actually have a new business which i can get new business credit cards for so that's pretty exciting. I might just recycle all of that and put it as my next sequence, especially because i'm still under 524, but once i decide like yo, i'm trying to travel more, i'm trying to get status with. You know delta american or start really going to these hotels and traveling a lot more. That's when i'll start going into the co-branded cards, but i have my core at this point.
It's really about me figuring out exactly which cards i'm going to break, even which cards i'm going to downgrade which cards i'm going to get rid of, and it doesn't hurt that bad to close a new credit card. If i close this one, oh boy, my score is going to take, but if i close something like this that i applied for this year, it's not going to hurt my score as much, because my average age of accounts is not going to get impacted that significantly. So that that's a common misconception that i wanted to clear in the air i i have all of these cards, especially since i was in college. The reason why i can keep all of them. Oh sorry, i'm sweating! Okay, that's embarrassing! Cheese, yo, okay! So the reason why so the reason why so the reason why i'm not closing these two cards is because they have no annual fee and they will hurt my credit account pretty significantly. So i don't mind closing these cards. It's not gon na hurt as bad, but i do mind closing these cards because i will see a drop in my credit score. That's the card i'm getting next! If i were to change anything in my credit card setup, what would i change? Not much? Really um probably other than the freedom and the freedom unlimited swap, but other than that, not really man.
I. I really think this is the sequence that many people should go with, but my situation is not the same as most people. Some people may not. You know get into these, or some people may go straight into the reserve, but in my opinion this is really one of the best ways to go.
This is really the guide that i recommend a lot of my friends to go with, especially if you want to accumulate a lot of points, a million points, that's what we have so far, and these are the cards that i have gotten so far.
