For years the tesla short sellers have been talking about the upcoming eevee competition. However, every single year they are proven wrong. Over and over again mercedes, bmw, volkswagen, gm audi and porsche are all coming out. With 300 mile electric luxuries to death, i think they're doomed, the big boys are coming and they're coming with sexy.

Looking cars at the same price point with better features faster cars. Great styling gm has recently unveiled their plan to roll out a new electric vehicle portfolio with one of those vehicles being a 400 mile range chevy. But is this really the competition that tesla shorts have been looking for, or are we at another dead end in this video? I'm gon na unpack, gm's 179 page sustainability report and determine whether or not general motors is catching up to tesla. If you're new to the channel.

Please consider subscribing for more content like this and let's get right into it. Gm plans to reveal 20 electric vehicles by 2023, which will all use gm's platform named ultium. This list of evs consists of four luxury: cadillac suvs: two chevrolet suvs, one chevrolet pickup truck one gmc hummer pickup truck one gmc, hummer suv, one buick suv, one buick crossover and one autonomous vehicle that will be manufactured in partnership with honda. Now the aspects that caught most people's eyes was a chevrolet bet truck, which gm claims will offer over 400 miles of range on a single charge.

At first, it may seem surprising that gm was able to achieve such a high range. However, a few subtle hints show that this actually isn't that fantastic of an electric vehicle throughout the sustainability report gm based the range of their evs using the nedc range test. The nedc range test, also known as the new european driving cycle test, is known for overestimating. The driving range of a vehicle in comparison to the epa range test, for example the tesla model 3 long range version - has an nadc range of 419 miles and an epa range of 322 miles.

Clearly, this is a move by gm to inflate the performance of their upcoming vehicles. Another aspect that catches my eye is the fact that the price of the chevrolet bet truck is never mentioned or hinted at throughout the report. This comes off as incredibly suspicious to top it off gm claims that its battery energy storage goes up to 200 kilowatt hours. So if the chevrolet bet truck has a 200 kilowatt battery pack, this means that the truck has a battery size 2.6 times larger than the tesla model.

3 long range version. Nonetheless, elon musk has been waiting for the competition for quite a while now and in any dc range above 400 is still a major improvement for gm still waiting. The reason why gm is able to improve the range of its vehicles is because of gm's new battery technology, as the company recently unveiled its new battery testing lab. This slab is part of gm's 1.5 billion dollar investment into the general motors technical center.

Gm claims that its old tm battery has 70 percent less cobalt than usual and eliminates 80 of the wiring in the original bolt ev. The company also claims that its batteries that are going to be manufactured in partnership with lg chem will cost less than 100 dollars per kilowatt hour, which is quite impressive. If it's true, these batteries will be produced in a new battery plant in lordstown ohio, which gm invested 2.3 billion dollars into the factory is expected to have a capacity of 30 gigawatt hours per year. To put this into comparison, gigafactory 1 had an annual output of 35 gigawatt hours per year in 2019, so gm expects its factory to manufacture almost as much as tesla's.
What's ironic, however, is that, after gm announced its plan to build a gigafactory, elon musk hinted at an upcoming terror factory. Now, along with the list of ev's gm plans to release in the next few years, we also got to see some leaked designs of the gm lineup. This includes the cadillac lyric, the chevrolet menlo, the gmc yukon xl denali, gm's autonomous vehicle and a buick suv that doesn't have a name. Yet.

The only vehicle out of this list that we got a range on was the chevrolet menlo, which has an nedc range of 254 miles. The funny thing about this was that gm was too scared to put the range in the unit miles, so the automaker had to put the range in the unit. Kilometers add on the facts that the nedc range test is vastly inaccurate and we're looking at a vehicle that has a range in the high 100s, while gm has previously stated that they were all in on electric vehicles. The truth is that gm is still investing in gas powered cars.

Back in october 2019, the gm ceo told reuters that 30 percent of gm's cash will go to investing in future gas-powered vehicles. Gm has been all talk and little action in the past and with the new report, it's either no different or all talk in a little bit more action, dane parker, gm's new chief sustainability officer actually stated that gm has already been part of one revolution in the Way we transport people, and now we have the opportunity to do it again with evs. In my opinion, until we see gm spending 90 or more of their cash on electric vehicles and transitioning some of their ice factories to electric, i wouldn't qualify gm as being serious about evs. When we take a look at volkswagen, the ceo has converted plenty of the automaker's gas factories to electric plants and is investing every cent of cash.

    Not to mention the lithium ion battery technology doesn't usually last more than 100,000 mile lifespan versus a gasoline vehicle that gets over 200,000 before it needs a major component replacement such as a motor or transmission. The maintenance cost is extremely expensive with an electric vehicle considering the batteries cost tens of thousands of dollars and have to be made from new materials due to the extreme lack recycling technology up until 2021 that really hasn't even fully taken off. People we still have lithium ion car battery packs sitting in junk yards all over the country because there is no value or means to recycle them.

    When you purchase an electric vehicle the chances of your vehicle being charged with electricity provided by hydroelectric, nuclear fission, solar power, or wind power are very very small compared to the percentage of your electricity that comes from burning coal. Not even mentioning the fact an enormous amount of electricity is lost during transport from the power plant that generates it to the location where you charge your car. Electric cars might not directly produce emissions but they produce emissions derived from coal which are far worse than gasoline and diesel fuel. The absolute number one reason me personally I would not ever purchase an electric vehicle is the fact it have a limited range and down time especially if you own a business. The second reason why I would never purchase an electric vehicle is because the environmental impact associated with producing lithium batteries not to mention companies have been manufacturing toxic lithium and nickel cadmium batteries for over 10 years with no proper disposal or recycling method set in place for consumers or recyclers handling this leftover material after it's used. The only reason anybody is interested in producing electric vehicles is because they get a huge tax break from the government on top of the huge tax breaks that they already get other than Tesla that has been existing. The everyday consumer that drives 15 20 miles to work and back every day is a great candidate for an electric vehicle, but for people that own businesses and rely on transportation as a means to make a living you're not going to catch them dead on the side of the road charging their vehicle halfway through the day. Why don't you manufacture something small business owners and transportation industry would actually actually buy like a diesel electric Cummins powerstroke or Duramax pickup truck.

    Lets say it does do good. GM still has not even close to being able to mass produce lithium batteries. No infrastructure to be able to charge there cars like Tesla, so you are semi limited to drive vehicles max range. I really wish they all got serious and male it happened. Remember to that the reason Tesla has succeeded is because it comes as a full package and it technology has been proven. I bought a 2018 model 3 for $49,000 and I just traded in for a Model Y. Trade in value was $39,000. The true cost was actually less than $49,000 since I got the $7,500 dollar credit back then. That means I drove this car for 2.5 years and hardly lost any value. I would have keep it but I needed a slightly bigger car. Not sure what resale value this other have but Tesla has me sold. Did not even get to replace once set of tires and zero maintenance. Sorry, did replace cabin filter and wiper blades once. And the cost you save with electricity is 2/3 of what I would have paid in gas last year prices, more savings with todays gas prices going up.

    The Tesla truck is the ugliest thing I have seen. Looks like something the grade 12 auto shop class built. The company is over valued. Good things come to people who wait GM will produce a great pick up like they always have. The GM eletric Hummer shows what they can produce.

    As long as they bring the electric vehicles to the market for people to buy they will be sold unlike Tesla that does not bring their vehicles to the sale and do not make their vehicles so that people can buy them they only talk about vehicles with Tesla he never actually produced them or put them on any line for anyone to buy it's just talk so if anyone makes a vehicle that actually brings it to market and puts it for sale it will be bought can't say enough about how Tesla does not bring their vehicles to market

    Lets be honest, Tesla is not doing so great as a car company. They make money from "selling" emission quotas to other car manufacturers, they got more money from that than they made profit overall.
    Once the other car manufacturers ramp up their EV production/sales and other low emission cars, that income stream is completely gone…

    In EV sales in the last decade, GM ranked #2 behind Tesla with 234,000 EVs sold so instead of throwing hate towards GM, how about throwing some hate at Ford, Chrysler, Kia, Hyundai, and VW who all combined haven't sold as many EVs as GM has.

    Tesla has several advantages that the legacy makers will never be able to match. First legacy costs retired employees retirement and health benefits, no legacy dealer network, supercharger network, every high overhead costs. Finally Tesla understands that BEV have to be completely re-engineering for efficiency. These factors will prevent the legacy maker to ever be cost competitive with Tesla. Tesla also doesn’t have to pay for pollution credits they sell them.

    GM using 90% of it's profits in EVs alone is beyond unrealistic. They are a gas powered car company that is making a few EVs. Ford isn't diverting that much capitol into EVs either. Traditional ICE vehicles aren't going anywhere anytime in the foreseeable future so it's highly unrealistic to expect current ICE companies to simply divert all their resources into a product that, currently, is not even comparable to the profitability of ICE products.

    GM is an international vehicle manufacturer. Given that every country in the world uses the metric system except for 3, it only makes sense that GM would list key specifications using the metric system.

    Cybertruck comes from Tesla, who are amazing, but it's a sport car disguised as a truck.
    Chevy Silverado is a body on frame, so it won't sag down when a quad bike is put on it. That is good for doing work. Also, body on frame allows cab chassis, meaning that it can be modified into a fire truck, for example.

    The smart legacy auto makers will initially provide PHEV’s with an all-electric range of about 50 miles.

    Why?

    1. Most people drive less 40 miles a day.

    2. Small batteries are way faster to recharge.

    3. Batteries don’t last forever, so they eventually need to be replaced. The smaller, the cheaper.

    4. The ICE eliminates range anxiety altogether for those rare long distance trips.

    5. You can build more cars if you use smaller batteries.

    6. The investment is much less initially.

    Walk before you run.

    If GM or Ford offered a PHEV pickup with a true 75-100 mile range battery, I’d buy that before any Cybertruck.

    Once your Cybertruck runs out of juice out in the middle of nowhere, you’re screwed.
